Tricare for Life

While my wife is TFL and Medicare is treating her well, I'm still Tricare Prime. We will be full-time traveling starting March 2017. Is anyone else full-timing and using Tricare Prime? Is it hard to get to a participating doctor or will I be using Tricare Extra/Standard?

We found using Standard to be no problem for the most part.

One thing to do is call and get authorization before you make an appointment or fill a prescription if you are out of your home area. Usually not a problem but once in a while there will be a glitch and you won't get reimbursed for your cost. In ten years we got bit twice, fortunately on fairly inexpensive stuff.

While I am not fulltiming now but I did fulltime from 2009 through 2012 and used Tricare prime(I primarely use the VA and wife only uses Tricare prime.). We did have a home base for doctors but were almost never there. On the one time my wife needed extended medical care we changed our area to the place we were at, it was very easy and caused no problems when we changed back. I presently am with Humanu and the wife is with United healthcare as I have found United healthcare is a horrible company by experience and while Humanu has its problems I found was much easier to navigate and get the required information to get things done.

We have always used Tricare Standard and just "self insured "for the $3k cap. Only once in all our years(even while Ron was still active so were talking 45 years) did we ever get there. While fulltimers it has allowed us to go where we needed and the best part not needing referrals. That has been helpful in allowing us to pick what WE decide is the best specialist anywhere in the US that we wanted to use. Now on TFL and still happy with our choices

Was on a 6-month trip out of our Prime area (south region). Wife and I got sick in Albuquerque. Called Humana South for a referral to an urgent care clinic. Was VERY easy to do. Did NOT have to contact our PCM, just called Prime for the referral. They also found the clinic for us.

Seems like a lot of fulltimers go the Standard route and are happy with it. I do not know which option is less expensive. It may depend on how much you use it and for what it is used.
