Tesla Model X Debuts - New performance and luxury standard For SUVs

The Tesla Model X launched yesterday, here is the page on the Tesla website: http://www.teslamotors.com/modelx

It has the specs and still pictures for the bandwidth challenged and a ten minute video of the actual event with Elon Musk from yesterday. The video is optional but all the rest is good info.

Some interesting highlights:

It has a giant HEPA cabin air filter that is rated to remove microbes and virus'?

It is actually faster than the Model S as in "Ludicrous Mode" (Optional) as the Model S = 0-60 in 3.8 seconds. Model X = 3.2 seconds with the Ludicrous option. (and still get 250 miles of range)

It has sensors in the gull wing doors that allow them to open with a foot of space and not scratch the cars on either side that they show. They also can open in a sort ceilinged garage. They adjust how they open. The video is the only way to see it.

The accessory rack holds bikes and/or skis, with as usual a unique design.

It holds 7 people and all their luggage. As well it has a great accessory pack. Many folks won't get to the 20 minute mark on the Tesla video but for those that do, they have a Model X come in towing an Airstream and the seven people and luggage. It is like an optical illusion.

That's an SUV!

At $130,000.00 it won't be on many of our shopping lists. But to me, an investor, I feel a bit proud of our achievement. Yes, "Our achievement." It took a lot of believers in the cause and in Musk to hang in there long, as I am still doing. I looked at the Roadster, the Model S, and now the Model X, as I looked at and look at the AC Cobra, Sunbeam Tiger, 64 'Vette ragtop, Ferrari Dino, XKE Jag, Lamborghini Countach, etc. as cars I would love to have but at the time were or are beyond the budget of a military NCO and retiree. Even with my several successful businesses I am not worth a million let alone paying that and much more for some of my dream cars. But rather than throw stones at them in a sour grapes covetous way, I am glad they and Musk are here.

Just a couple of years to the Model 3 that even I can afford. It took all the preceding to make that possible.

Here is a shorter video showing the Model X:

Copied from the Seattle Times website, 9/30/15:

Potential buyers still don’t know what Tesla is charging for the sport-utility vehicle.

Tesla has only released pricing for the Model X Signature, the series’ specially badged, fully loaded cars. They start at $132,000.

Musk has said the regular X will start at about $5,000 more than a comparably equipped Tesla Model S electric sports sedan, but there’s no public price sheet

But there’s no information about which features might be standard on the X that are optional on the current S. So a comparison of base models could be higher. The base model of the all-wheel-drive Model S starts at $76,200 before a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric cars. That would put the starting price of a Model X around $81,200.

It also could be Tesla is still so far away from putting the model into meaningful production and sales that Musk doesn’t yet know what the price will ultimately be, said Mark Spiegel, a hedge-fund manager for Stanphyl Capital Partners who is shorting Tesla’s stock, a bet that pays off if Tesla shares fall.

Methinks there's a bit of a difference between delivering 6 vehicles and actually having a production model.

Derek, there is a lot to be said for identifying an opportunity and sticking with it. There is not one among us that gets it right all the time.

But the flip side, if I may be so bold, is "Wimax". I type this while looking at my phone screen that says Koodo LTE.

Good article Joel! Your article goes on to say:

Excerpt:

"The automaker’s website doesn’t reveal much about the vehicle. Customers can place an order for a Model X — as long as they deposit $5,000 — but can’t configure a car or get a final price.

Tesla says it would deliver cars ordered now in the second half of 2016, but declined to provide further details on its manufacturing schedule or the timing of more deliveries.

“We are not sharing any additional information on deliveries,” said spokeswoman Khobi Brooklyn.

There’s still little information on how quickly the Palo Alto, Calif., car company can ramp up production at its Fremont, Calif., factory, where both the Model X and S are produced.

Tesla will make about 50,000 cars this year, mostly Model S sedans. It needs to start producing the Model X crossovers in much greater numbers than by the handful if it is to meet its stated goal of manufacturing 85,000 to 90,000 Model X and S vehicles next year.

Tesla did reveal some Model X specs at Tuesday’s launch near the Fremont factory.

• The sound system in the X contains 17 speakers.

• It is the first electric vehicle with a 5,000-pound towing capacity.

• One version of the crossover will be able to go 155 miles per hour and reach 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. “This goes so fast, it’s wrong,” Musk said.

• It will be able to travel 250 miles between charges.

• The X comes standard with automatic emergency braking and side-collision avoidance to prevent accidents.

• The car’s air filter has a “biodefense” mode, which, according to Musk, keeps out viruses, bacteria and spores.

“We try to be a leader in apocalyptic defense scenarios,” he joked."

He was late on the model X because of the engineering goals set and met. Typical Musk. He also makes things happen as opposed to talking about concepts never to be accomplished.

If you believe that he will not succeed and produce the Model 3 next, while the Gigafactory pumps out his batteries at much less for Tesla, I think otherwise. I believe he is going to be in full production much faster by several years than the vaporware concept cars from Porsche et al. But then again, the investor emotions run high and could lead to an even better buy opportunity of the stock in the next few months as production ramps up and the naysayers and shorts get overwhelmed yet again. Remember the hysterical claims of fires? The electrocution rumors? The electric cars are not feasible arguments pre Roadster? I think the magnitude of what he is building, never mind what he has built, is hard for folks to wrap their minds around. Look back at these posts next year.

But let's remember that I took all my own money plus $5k more off the table back when Tesla was at 70. I will reevaluate my investment with Tesla in the 2017-2018 timeframe. It makes no difference if he is a little late as he was with the first Teslas, Roadsters. As long as he does as he did with all his companies.

But I fully intend to be alive next year and we will both see the production as it ramps up. These weren't concept cars like the Porsche, which they said they would begin to make around 2020.

Let's remember he said he'd produce the Roadster first, Luxury sedan second, SUV third, then the consumer priced Model 3 last as planned. When was the last time Musk failed to bring his cars and rockets into production despite any setbacks and full production delays.

Anyone else have an AWD SUV for less that does 0-60 in 3,2 seconds, carried 7, gull wing doors, and a biodefense air filtration system stock?
