TxYellowRose
Planning our trip from Florida to Texas via I-10 West. Does one have to go through tunnels, specifically around Mobile? I've done a bit of research online but still not positive there is a bridge now that eliminates the George Wallace Tunnel, etc. Thanks!
JC and Angie
Yes. I believe there is a tunnel. It's a tunnel that's big enough for big rigs like mine and I don't remember a restriction on propane. If there is one I have not stopped or been stopped. It's short enough to not get worried about it. Don't do traffic hours!!!
2gypsies
Interstates are traveled by semi trucks. Any tunnels and a RV can safely drive it. There is one around Mobile.
Alie&Jim's Carrilite
We always follow the I-10 route thru the tunnel. Its short in length, tall ceiling, wide lanes, I usually get boxed in with a semi on the side and never feel "Close"
LFDR3116
From my understanding from being in the area, the tunnel on I-10 is the one you need. I read somewhere that the older one is smaller and has "no trucks" .
Big Greg
I have been though the Wallace tunnel on I10 a dozen plus times towing, you will have no troubles. It's 2 lanes in both directions. The old nearby Bankhead tunnel leads to Government Street in downtown Mobile (many live oak trees with low limbs) and has a 12 foot (at the most) clearance. You will have no trouble on I10, there is a bridge that hazardous materials are diverted to. Greg
sushidog
I went through the George Wallace tunnel on I-10 in Mobile Saturday. You will be fine going from east to west. Going west to east the road takes a rather sharp turn entering the tunnel, so slow to 40-45 MPH. Do not take the old HWY-90 tunnel is it is not big rig friendly (low clearance.) Turn your propane off before entering the tunnel. Other than that, there are no restrictions and there is plenty of overhead clearance. jbh
The I-10 tunnel isn't a big deal, and it's the first tunnel I ever drove our 36' MH through. As mentioned, there's a hard curve at the west end; if you're heading west it's a left turn. The US-90 bridge is about three miles north. High bridges always give me the willies especially on a windy day.
