Hi,

We are starting to make plans for 2017. We will be in Florida through January and then head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Any suggestions on where to stay along the way? What about when we get to New Orleans? Want a safe place in reasonable driving distance to 'activities.' How do you go about getting tickets to events, parades, etc? We'll maybe do one night time parade but otherwise will stay with daytime things. Thank you. Ellen

Two years ago, we went to Mobile, Al for the parade and events. It was a lot nicer and more family oriented than our earlier visit to New Orleans which was higher priced and had a lot rougher crowd. At Mobile, they tossed out lots of beads and moon pies, and we just felt safer there.

Try both places for the experience. When at New Orleans, use the public bus transport and eliminate the downtown parking hassle.

Many of the coastal town from Florida to New Orleans have Mardi Gras Parades. Later you will be able to get an official Mardi Gras schedule online that will have a listing of various towns, date and times for the parades as well as other celebrations, such a boat parades etc. You may be able to start in one area and go to several of the parades working your way to New Orleans if you still want to. You will also find that many of the parishes have their own parades. You can go to parades for 2 weeks or more every day. Can't tell you when to start checking for a 2017 schedule, but the 2016 schedules are starting to be posted already. Just google mardi gras 2017 until you start getting information.
