You are the go to guy for Nokia Phones. Soon to be 13 year GD dropped her phone again. BD coming up in 11 days Want to get her a Windows 8.1 phone. They use T-Mobile in HI so I looked at the T-Mobile site and they had the Nokia Luma 635 remanufactured for $69.00 plus $15 for the sim starter kit. Thoughts on this Nokia Phone or a better suggestions? Keep in mind that she is on her 3rd phone so not looking to drop real big bucks for a 13 year old.

Dennis,

I don't own it but the reviews are as good as my 822. Read these Walmart reviewers:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/T-Mobile-Nokia-Lumia-635-Prepaid-Smartphone/37621322

Here's your full spec set, very good:

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_lumia_635-6254.php

Now that 635 has no front camera, so no selfies. Here's a review with the advantages and disadvantages:

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_lumia_630-review-1080.php

For six bucks more you can get twice the phone, new, with the selfie front camera and flash on the main one

They have the GSM unlocked 822 like mine, with all the features of the 635 and none of the cons for $74.98 on Amazon with Prime new! http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Lumia-Unlocked-Verizon-Windows/dp/B00H4F9WDA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435714619&sr=8-1&keywords=nokia+lumia+822

I'm sure it can get to HI with Prime in time. It is T-Mobile GSM unlocked.

Order a protective case like this one I have: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AR255GK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

And screen protectors: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AB294HW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

Thanks RV just the type of info I was looking for. I noticed the 822 is a Windows 8 phone not a 8.1? I would like to make sure it has the personal assistant feature Contrena or whatever her name is. I have found a really nice Microsoft Luma 640 at the Microsoft store for $129. It comes with office 365 for a year which is no big deal for a 13 year old I am sure. It is a Win 8.1 phone and has both the front camera and the flash and is upgradable to Win 10. It is more expensive but then she is my only Redheaded 13 year old GD

The lady in the Microsoft Store Chat room told me there would be no other costs. That all they would need to do is take it to the t-mobile store and have it activated because they are already t-mobile users and this was a t-mobile phone?

Sorry to not be clearer.

I have Cortana. Compare the specs between them yourself on the Windows website.

Mine is an 8.1 phone and I got the update by joining the Microsoft Insider program. MS directly updates their phones. I have 8.1 Denim on my 822. Painless upgrade just do it in the evening plugged in before going to bed. It was also listed as being one that will get the WP10 upgrade. The Windows Insider program requires nothing but installing the app: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/windows-insider/ed2b1421-6414-4544-bd8d-06d58ee402a5

More info, go here and scroll down to list of supported mobile phone devices: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Insider There you will see that we missed only the initial buggy pre release and we are onboard for the rest including 10, as said in the verbiage above the list of supported mobile devices.

I can't really comment on phones I have not tried I can only look at their specs like the no front phone which I cautioned about above.

I would opt for a bigger screen and a native 8.1 phone too. Just make sure it has an SD card slot, and a quad core processor and enough memory to handle what a kid does with one. And for goodness sake order the 10 dollar or so hybrid case and screen protector with the phone from Amazon. Buying fro the phone company or local store will cost a lot more than the Amazon sellers. I'll put some of my ten buck cases and rate them above Otterboxes one of which I tried.

I thought you were sticking to a low end budget! Wow! I scrolled down to and click on tech specs and kept going to the reviews. 5" screen and great specs. It has the 8mo back camera and the front selfie cam too! I'll be looking at that one when I get through testing WP 10 on mine.

Thanks for getting me to look again at what they've got. And now you'll have a full blown expert in the family to infect the rest with Windows phone envy.

I got to thinking She only turns 13 once, She is my only Red Headed Grand Daughter, She is the apple of my eye and She does call me PAPA.

I am counting on her to learn the Windows OS and walk me and grandma through it when we finally make the jump to a smart phone after win 10 comes out. I also got her a pretty but double armor case to go with it.

Thanks for all the advice and help.

YW Dennis, my pleasure. I kind of figured out that was in your futures. I resisted them until like 4 years ago. Heck I refused to get any cell phone not issued by the AF or the Company I did five years for last. I did get one for my SH as she can't duke it out as easily and rarely brings her gun. MIne started out as a trade item someone threw in as a device they did not use. IT was Straight Talk but I wanted it for the SD card for a music player. I was shocked that it charged as he did not have the charger. It was filthy and I cleaned it up, got a hybrid case for it, and started using it with my Jabra hands free with FM retransmitter just to play music for a year and a 32GB mp3 player for free was the right price. I got my first Jabra the same way from a car dealer friend who had no idea what it was and no charger to try. It charged and is still in use today in one of my cars as we bought two more refurbed for $29 each so we have one in each of our cars and the truck. Since it didn't cost much I tried ST and activated it after a year and Jack harping on me to try it. Now don't get me wrong, I had a flip phone and a Bluetooth earpiece and Garmin 4" GPS and ran a 100 mile radius sales area for our steel building construction company. I also had a second phone just so the boss could reach me easily as I was out 18 hours many days and six days a week. I got paid big money for the work no complaints here. But I was on the phone non-stop and pulling over too much so I got the Bluetooth earphone and that got me hands free before I had my Jabra 5 years later. Also had the brick in the military 24/7. I just don't want an electronic leash. I tell all I leave it in the car so always leave a voicemail or don't bother calling. :)
