canyonier
In early August , we plan to take I-70 east from Grand Junction, Colo. to around Wolcott, Colo. then head north to around Laramie, Wyo. I know we'll be going thru Glenwood Springs and near Steamboat Springs. Both of those places have natural hot springs pools to soak in. Do you recommend these places or are they not so good? Are there other hot springs in the area we could visit instead or, in addition to? Thanks, Glenn
JRP
The hot springs at Glenwood are very commercialized and associated with an adjacent hotel/spa/swimming pool. I was up there kayaking the river a couple weeks back and heard about a brand new hot springs opening sometime this summer, right along the river at the old Iron Mountain Spa. When I lived in Steamboat (25 yrs ago) there were 2 hot springs, one near the west end of town, right along the Yampa River; and one more remote in the woods outside Strawberry Park, that involved a short hike or cross country ski in winter (this one was clothing optional back then). We've got several nice hot springs down here in southern Colorado as well, but not on your route: Pagosa Springs, Ouray, Buena Vista/Nathrop Here's an online listing: http://www.colorado.com/articles/27-colorado-hot-springs-quick-guide
2gypsies
Pagosa Springs in Pagosa is our favorite. It has pools of varying temperatures and it's fun to see how hot you can go! They are concrete and kept very clean. They're overlooking the river.
