Missoula; Stuff To Do?

Free tastings at Big Sky Brewery. (Their signature beer is the very popular Moose Drool.). There are several good breweries and brewpubs in town. We wanted to go to the Smoke Jumper Museum but it was closed for the season when we were there after Labor Day.

good suggestions above. I also enjoyed exploring the nearby section of the Lewis & Clark Trail.

As a whitewater kayaker, I spent time in the Alberton Gorge section of the Clark Fork River and they have rafting trips there during the early summer runoff, otherwise later in summer its just a nice swimming hole to cool off. With 3 nearby rivers there are also lots of fishing opportunities.

Although my bones break too easily to participate these days, Missoula has one of the best skate parks in the country, MoBash Park, and its great fun to watch the younger crowd perform their skating tricks here.

The downtown square in Missoula seemed to have lots of ongoing activities and weekly special events all summer.

Just west of Missoula at mile marker 82 is US Forest Service Remount Depot. Very interesting place that tells about packing mules and still in service today. Might even be an Escapee given the talk. North of Missoula off US 93 onto Montana 200 is the National Bison Range. Nice driving tour. When leaving the driving tour and come out on US 93, there is an Amish store in St. Ignatius. Also recommend the Smokejumper school and you can see some of the newer fire fighting planes at the airport providing they are not deployed. I also liked watching the train behind Jim and Mary's as it came down a downgrade, around a turn with the brakes squealing and then pouring the coal to it as there was a climb coming out of that turn.

One hour north of Missoula on US93 is Polson and the south end of Flathead Lake. Another 1 1/2 hour north of Polson is Glacier National Park. There is lots to do around Missoula. We often visit Caras Park in the summer. It has all sorts of activities including a carousel. You can ride a bike almost anywhere in and around Missoula.
