I don't understand why you get then without warning? I have both a Mac and an I-phone and in both cases they ask before they do an update. Can't you configure yours to ask you first?

PS: I just checked and both Amazon & Google are working for both my Mack, my HP & from my I-phone.

I have a prompt now, for my MacBook Air. One option is to 'Autoupdate'. I personally never set any of my equipment for Autoupdate. I want to br prompted, and then I usually then let things simmer for awhile... I get prompted, and choose 'Remind Me Tomorrow'. Usually do this two or three times, then check Google or other sources to see if any problems are popping up.

One exception, is to Virus Protection, this I do have on Autoupdate - not sure if that's a good idea or not. Never had a problem, and feel it may have saved me a few times by having updates that I may have stalled on.

Best of luck to you on this. And I'll keep moving my update out on this one for a few days!
