LED installation tips

Recommended Posts

I search for the type then use the cheapest including shipping button and find a supplier in the US.

You can see the specs for the particular LED in the write up with lumens, voltage range etc.

So did you buy the cheapest bulbs that had a voltage range or just the cheapest which don't seem to have a voltage range? For example I can get ten of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Warm-White-T10-BA15S-1156-LED-48SMD-Panel-Interior-Dome-Map-RV-Trailer-Light/261700514519?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3Db56d49c84c5b4e52a0be3ac1d90acbe0%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D2%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D201161822452

for $17.95 total price!!

Or I can get two of these https://www.goldengadgets.com/auto-rv-marine-led-lights/single-pole-ba15s-1156/ba15s-1141-1156-rv-led-bulb-replacement-18-x-led-warm-white-220-lumens.html for $11.99 but they have a voltage range of 10 - 30 volts.

What do you think of these two choices? Go for the 10 pack because I can burn out 6 or 7 and still be ahead... maybe?

I bought some of the multi led replacement mats with double sided tape. They were great but eventually heated up much more than the mats could hold letting these very warm bulb sets drop down on the plastic lens. I learned later from posts here that with RV 12 volt fluctuations the LEDs begin to draw more and heat up more with time. I ordered my first one from eBay for under five dollars and it tested well. So I ordered ten more from another vendor for a set of ten for $15. These are the ones that worked well for about three or four days then they started overheating and dropping down. I ordered a second set unfortunately and they were much worse. Most never worked at all.

I had just ordered the softer ones ffoil did in the thread here on SKPs forums: http://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?showtopic=119470&hl=

They turned out to be a bit difficult to press in but really no problem. But boy are they an improvement over the first batch. These go in like bulbs, and are cooled better, as well as designed for the variable voltages we get in RVs. I still have the first set for $15 that did better but do drop down on the lens. But they aren't turning the adhesive brown and seem a fire risk. I will be ordering the ones he recommends for five bucks each in a set of ten soon. We are moved into our new home and the RV had the AC heating side of the refrigerator go out but work fine on gas thankfully, so I put off troubleshooting the AC side until we no longer needed it. Once I have the AC side repaired ( fuse/connection/board/heating element) I'll replace those LEDs in the RV.

In these, price is no indicator of quality. I've also found two lots from the same vendor on eBay can be totally different.

BooneDocks that is one nice install!

Joel thanks for that link too.

I am researching LEDs for our house too. Cree just came out with a standard bulb rated with the most light, with the least watts, and the longest life expectancy backed by the longest warranty. I read about them here: http://cleantechnica.com/2015/09/18/cree-delivers-new-better-led-bulb/

How much? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-60W-Equivalent-Daylight-A19-Dimmable-LED-Light-Bulb-with-4-Flow-Filament-Design-BA19-08050OMB-12DE26-3-1/206413889 That is the newest tech for anyone looking for house bulbs or AC fixtures in an RV. We've lots of can lights and those will be replaced later. I've already used LED standard bulbs for all our outside and inside lights that used them. I like the better quality warm LEDs over the cool ones. Lots of junk out there too. Paying more isn't a guarantee either.

I recently updated my TT lighting inside and out with LED's. I ran into one issue after replacing the Tail Light Bulbs. When applying the brakes, the LED clearance lights come on. Is this a resistance issue or something else?
