You really want to avoid 60 in Phoenix, surface street with lots and lots of traffic and stop lights. Use Google Street View to get a look at it and see what you are facing.

Much better to use I-17 to AZ 74 (Carefree Highway) then US 93 see the route below:

Slopoke..while in Kingman, if you haven't been before, stay the extra day and drive to Oatman in the mountains. It is an old mining town that turned the old buildings into shops, & places to eat, with bank robberies and shoot outs for the crowds. The draw to Oatman are the wild donkeys that freely roam the town. You can even buy food for them from little machines along the sidewalks. It is a beautiful drive to Oatman and a fun little town.

We took the route from Phoenix to Kingman last summer. On the section from Wickenburg to I-40, we were surprised to find 3 or 4 stretches of two lane highway, 5 miles long or longer with no shoulders, and some 40mph or slower curves. On much of this 2 lane highway we drove at 45-50mph. These same sections have very few opportunities for cars & trucks to pass slower moving RV's.

Overall the pavement condition was good and we wouldn't hesitate to drive it again. It just wasn't the easy fast 55-60mph drive I had expected.

Being US-93 is the only practical route from Phoenix to Kingman and on to Las Vegas I was surprised to see that Arizona had not upgraded the highway to at least 2 lanes with paved shoulders and passing lanes every 5 miles or so. There are sections where there is 4 lane divided highway and construction where they are widening the highway.

I think they are still fighting over putting in a Phoenix to Vegas interstate which has been a dream for years.

I think that is like Texas & I-35. The powers to be want toll roads so they have TXDOT dragging their feet on upgrading I-35 from San Antoino to the OK border. Lost of this interstate should have been upgraded to 6 lane or 8 lane years ago. Quiet a bit of it is 6 lane now, but it has taken 25 years to get there.

Thank you for the suggestion Carol. We do not have a toad yet and we need to be home by the 16th because our home goes on the MLS that day. We are hoping that our home will sell by the first or second week of April. So we will stop and see Oatman after we see California in our rear view mirrors.

Enjoy the ride.
