RV_
Anyone else get the odd temporary VA card to get civilian care if you are too far away or can't get an appointment within 30 days? RV_
Here is more about it: http://www.va.gov/opa/choiceact/ What is it? Here are some other informative articles: http://www.dav.org/learn-more/news/2014/understanding-veterans-choice-card/ http://militaryadvantage.military.com/2014/07/how-choice-card-and-15-billion-will-help-vets-get-care/ How silly can it get? Nautical miles? Sounds like the old VA to me. http://www.wbir.com/story/news/local/2014/12/31/family-upset-with-new-veterans-choice-card/21123673/ Excerpt: "The centerpiece of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act (HR 3230) is a special $10 billion Veterans Choice Fund. Over the next three years," http://www.military.com/veterans-report/choice-card-and-helping-vets-get-care I don't use the VA as I'm retired. But I believe every vet should be getting the benefits they earned. I've always written my reps to support all vets, and posted my support here, as I've always done. I think this program may go a long way to solving the inadequacy of treating critically ill vets, who otherwise cannot afford their care elsewhere. Ray,IN
I think I remember reading on the VA website, this card does not authorize VA payment for services, merely authorization to obtain civilian services. It was in the form of a warning, because many vets had out-of-pocket expenses because they thought the card authorized VA payment. 2000 Winnebago Ultimate Freedom USQ40JD, ISC 8.3 Cummins 350, Spartan MM Chassis. RV_
Ray, It doesn't provide "authorization to obtain civilian services." My card clearly states that for treatment I must call for authorization if I met the criteria of the program, that only gave me the authority to call and ask for coverage and approval. If you have the card read it all. Especially the bottom of the front, and the back of the card. Excerpt: 'Every Veteran will receive a letter and a Choice Card in the mail with details about the program. Veterans will be eligible for the program and receive cards in three phases:1.Veterans who may live more than 40 miles from a VA facility.2.Veterans who are currently waiting for an appointment longer than 30 days from their preferred date or the date determined to be medically necessary by their physician.3.All remaining Veterans enrolled for VA healthcare who may be eligible for the Choice Program in the future. To set up an appointment with a non-VA provider, call the VA at 866-606-8198 and we will work with you to ensure you are approved for care in your community. How to Get Started▷ Additional Program Information•The Choice Program does not impact your existing VA health care or any other VA benefit.•If you are satisfied with your wait time at a VA facility and wish to continue waiting for VA care, there is nothing you need to do at this time.•Non-VA care is only covered by VA for medical needs which have been approved by your VA physician. We can happily schedule an appointment for other medical needs, but the we can only cover the cost of care related to your VA-approved health needs.• The Veteran Choice Program is part of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 (VACAA). DJW
RV I hope you are right. I just wonder how many Networks/Doctors are going to treat a patient based on another Doctors recommendations without running their own battery of test to see if they come to the same conclusions. And if they don't then what back to the VA for another consult? If you treat a patient for A based on the VA recommendation and it turns out he has B, who is on the hook when someone sues because they got treated for A and not B? I fear that the Civilian Medical Profession will look at that $159 Billion Dollar VA Budget and try to figure out a way to get some of that. I know they have only set $10 Billion aside for the program this year but we all know that means nothing when a new program/special interest group bellies up to the trough. I would have preferred to have the VA fixed and not extended the mismanagement to the civilian health care system. Dennis USA Master Sergeant Ret.
