windows 8.1 computer crashed

The first thing I would try is to boot in safe mode and then see if I can repair 'the problem' that caused the crash - possibly a corrupted system file.

With your system on, go to this link for info on safe mode in win 8

Here is an outside shot at what is happening. Your keyboard is not working correctly and sending characters that don't make sense. This happen to my GDaughter on her Asus.

But if it is a software problem, a restore to a prior point might easily fix the problem.

If you determine it is the keyboard, as The Duke said, you can install a USB keyboard by just using the mouse. You might be able to do the same with a Bluetooth keyboard.

Rover,

What version of Windows? Vista, 7, 8, 8.1?

Now on to why I asked and it is important with an admin privilege issue. Is it a native Windows 8.1 machine or a Windows 7 machine upgraded top 8/8.1. The reason for the question is that the UEFI and boot security is hardware supported only in Native machines with the UEFI hardware from the factory. But Duh? I did overlook the initial title naming the Windows version.

If you inadvertently put it in workgroup mode for a Local network or whatever follow these steps: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/enable-local-administrator-account-windows-8-1-workgroup-mode

sfc/scan now is how I would approach it but you may not be able to elevate cmd to administrator level. Give it a try however: http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com/win8/windows-8-freezes.html

Did you make any recovery system discs or USB Flash drive restore systems?

Here is another approach: http://www.groovypost.com/howto/enable-administrator-account-windows-8/

Just to check did you use these instructions to try to boot into safe mode? http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=faq-Windows-8&faq=66

Try them and let us know. More once you let me know if you have an upgrade or native hardware and software for UEFI boot security. That is one area I am trying to get a better grip on as images made with it enabled won't work when it is disabled to allow legacy support. I dropped it a few months ago and guess I need to pick it up again.

Edit: John already mentioned safe mode but his page assumed one knew how to execute msconfig.exe in 8.1. The link I provided includes how to run msconfig then is the same.

A lot of posters don't realize it but the forum hides the subject of a topic when someone opens posts using the "new content" links. It may appear in the title bar of the browser or the OS's icon but it isn't very noticeable. Here it was a bit of an aggravation but I really feel sorry for the folks posting For Sale topics that put critical info in the subject line and don't repeat it in the post body where most folks will see it.

I sure am pleased with all the responses! Next week I will take the Gateway NE 522; think this is right model to the library and with the help of a friend try some of the advice given! Crossing my fingers! I saved this info in the favorites menu on my tablet.

Thanks Stan for the info on repeating the important stuff in the body!

Tried the misconfig.exe, the safe mode and thought I had the system saved to a thumb drive. It only had the pictures, downloads, etc. files on it. It will not hook up to WiFi now, shows only broadband and regular internet. I am going to try more this week. The guest account will not connect to the internet. I have find someone with a hardwired intenernet connection.

There is an auto corrupt Windows file repair program called SFC for System File Checker. Print out these directions and run it:

Rover,

if you have the factory restore disks I'd try running them first. that would do the same as getting a new one. But usually hard drive contents get corrupted not the drive. Do a factory restore, then install Speccy from Piriform, the folks who do CCleaner. when you run ot it will take a few seconds to read your system and then just click on "Hard Drives" and check out the "Health" status from S.M.A.R.T.. If it says healthy then only your data on the drive was corrupted.

Speccy is free and the easiest program to read status of your system and drivers. You can stick to the main summary screen or go into more detail too. Most folks only need, and can use the basics easily

This is the problem! My thumb drive I downloaded to is lost and I have no external drive. I am going to the library This week and will try and go into the BIOS and boot from the internet! It won't from the guest account! Then see if I can get the internet to connect so I can download my administrator account from the cloud. I think I uploaded it there!

Rover,

With a Windows 8.1 computer you will run into issues if you try to effect changes without the backup you made specifically for that computer. If it is still in warranty call the vendor and tell them that you have an issue and need them to send you the media to restore your computer. And make sure they tell you how for your particular system. Even if they tell you 30 bucks for a thumb drive for your system pay it because whether you actually have a bad drive, and replace it, or when you do a factory restore to it from the stick and find your hard drive is OK, you need the media from your vendor company either way.

Well! Tried to do a reset from the repair screen. I choose the option to delete all files and save Win 8

It deleted all and left me with the Bios. Guess I will have to buy a thumb drive or SDHC with Windows program for the Gateway computer and try to reload.
