Well Ken you can't fix stupid and all the mandates or restrictions will make no difference to sum but on the other hand us that are using caution and common sense should be made to suffer and have our rights trampled on and business destroyed, I want the least amount of government in my life. From a year ago till now I'm guessing close to 50% of the population has been exposed and have buildup some immunity to it on their own witch is better a vaccine IMO.

    Denny

Now the “experts” claim that herd immunity from having the virus is short lived and want people to get the shots. I always am suspicious of the government especially now.

Change has always been met with resistance.  Horse owners complained about cars.  I suppose there were those who didn't want a telephone.  Then there was the DC vs AC wars.  There's a reasonable chance automakers will stop making gas-powered vehicles in the not too-distant future.

Not resistant to change. An electric does not meet my needs and I do not feel tax dollars should go for rebates to buy one or R&D to develop them. Just the way I feel. And I darn sure do not want the crooks in DC telling me I have to have one.

Yes, it was just a comic book whim!   My daughter wears hers all of the time.

Yes, the market place will decide.  That's why the market place built the Interstate Highway System - right?

The market place did decide in Texas.  They decided to make money and to hell with the customers that were caught because preventative maintenance and planning for change in environmental change  doesn't make money for investors.

Market place will decide on drug efficacy and safety.  We don't need FDA.   We don't need meat inspections, etc, market place will decide and if enough people die people won't shop there anymore.    Market place will decide when bridges should be replaced.   Rural electrification wasn't needed, the market place would have gotten around to those area in 100 years or so, maybe!

Does the government mandate you drive on the Interstate?

if I wanted an electric vehicle I would buy one, but I do not.

Part of the  recovery issues is insurance rates will surely go up.  So I see that because of the flexible rates some owners/shareholders will make astronomical profits. One article state Jerry Jones is going to make a ton.  I don't yet take these stories as factual but am leaning that way. Wow lots and lots of repercussions. Like fossils being wasted hauling debris to  landfills that may fill up and have to be maintained. I have got to stop thinking about all this. It is hurting my head.

Big Rick what legislative oversight? I see where one of our former governors said we would all be happy to put up with no water and power longer just to avoid regulations.  So as not to be political I won't name him but I do wonder about the power situation  at his house.

Well I planned ahead and have a whole house standby generator. And yes I do not want the corruption of Washington telling us how to do things.

And no one said that fossil fuels or nuclear would be done away with immediately!  But you would never know that from all of the histrionics going on. More and more alternatives will come along and we will use less and less fossil fuels.   I am just amazed that people don't understand that petroleum is a fuel-stock for pharmaceuticals, plastics, composites and all sort of things we don't even know about yet, which should lead us to keeping as much in the ground as possible since it is likely that we are on the downward part of the Hubbert Curve.

I have seen class action lawsuits are already starting to be filed in Texas, the cost of the cleanup to homes is going to negate the 'savings' the people were supposedly getting by the state being 'deregulated'.  The only deregulation was the amount of profits that could go into owners of companies, not consumers.

Well when they say ICE vehicles would be banned after a certain number of years it sure seems the direction the Green movement is headed

Only 10 yrs late, glad the legislature decided to do something!   ERCOT board lives IIRC, out of state, and is appointed by governor!

    Looks like you are wrong.

ERCOT board is appointed and reports to the Public Utility Commision with Legislative oversight

Except this is what was warned could happen after the 2011 storm.   Nothing unforeseen at all!

And the Legislature made recommendations to fix it. ERCOT did not. Time to fire all those at ERCOT and get people who will fix it.

Lt. gov. Says Legislature is now going to mandate the fix.

    24 percent is wind power.
About 56 percent of Texas' energy comes from natural gas, just under 24 percent comes from wind, 19 percent from coal, and almost 9 percent from nuclear energy.

I stand corrected, I have read both numbers depending on which “ expert” they cite in the article

The obvious elephant in the room with nuclear is what to do with the by products. Solve that issue and I will be a big proponent.

bigrick am I correct that turbines on froze in some places but states and countries had no issue with their? At this point as I understand that the turbines where all functioning they are such a small % of the system they could not come close to providing what we need.

Another speculation is that a cold enough temps I would guess a lot of oil would have trouble flowing which could cause issues with pump and valves also.

Wind is 28% of Texas energy, they froze along with valves on natural gas, etc

  10. 3 hours ago, Barbaraok said:

But they don't freeze in Iowa or Sweden or Denmark or ....

They froze BECAUSE OF TEXAS DEREGULATION.   They could have been weather hardened, same as all of the valves, etc., in other power generating systems, but they weren't because of deregulation and pulling out of the national power grid. This was a Katrine-level event for the bureaucracy in Texas.

They froze because they used a different type of lubricant ( more expensive) in the traditional cold weather areas. It seems if it is your cause being pushed the government is right and if not the government is wrong.

  11. 1 hour ago, Barbaraok said:

Wind is only 25% of the power generated in Texas and they don't requite cold wear protection.  When wind went down, other power generators COULD NOT COME BACK ON LINE so that their backup system FAILED and since they pulled out of the national electrical grid, there was no way to get extra electricity to them.   Simple methods that Iowa uses to ensure wind turbines keep going could have kept more power up, but Texas wanting to deregulate everything has proven to be a disaster.    AND some natural gas power plants that were operating also went down because they did not have adequate cold weather protection for valves, etc.   NO ONE source of power generation is adequate in a modern country.

The wind turbines froze! The fear oil was used would not withstand the cold.

EV’s should be charged a per mile road use tax. The are not contributing to road repair and maintenance. Subway and train fares should be increased to cover the actual cost.

ICE vehicles pay the tax in fuel taxes.
