Wish you would have said something at the rally.

I literally was across from you asking about it with Jack and Neal.  I made it home without incident and now considering replacement options.  DirecLink seems to be one to get for my use, present and future.

  2. As it turns out, during my travels to the National Rally, my brake controller allowed me to reduce my brake application- all the way to nothing.

So now I am in search for a viable replacement.  Direclink is high on the list, as is BluDot(only issue here is if I go back to pulling my Teton, the BluDot will require a bunch of work.

I have been advised about Hayes 100400B which seems like a good candidate.

    Any others?

And any experience with controllers in HDTs would be helpful.  Not so fond of coming down 6% grades without trailer brakes, thanks for the Volvo and its ability to exhaust brake and cruise control.

I said that other products are shown being sold out of that physical location.  As I understand, the current owners have multiple businesses operating there.

I thought I explained that well.

Dave & Tracey did well in growing the business and continuing the care and personal service Rick & Lyn started.

I believe they have gone from being a small couple owned and operated business to being part of larger corporation that has a few companies operating out of that location.  I find comfy robes, schwalm rv parts.  It has evolved from the days of Rick & Lynn filling orders out of their Volvo with the warehouse/DROM on the back.

have yet to get a straight answer

Because there isnt a straight answer.  It is so subjective to your own particular circumstances.  Gather the info available and apply what fits to your situation and make those decisions for yourself.

By looking at CL and Marketplace, even on this Forum,  frequently you may find someone that is selling their already converted HDT for a reasonable price and avoid the work associated with converting.  Then you can use that time enjoying the truck and trailer instead of working on the conversion.  The choice is all yours.

I will be there.  Not sure yet in what arrangement other than will attend the week.  Seems like last I looked, there were ~90 rigs??!!  My second time to this one.

So as life does, I had some guys come polish my wheels on the new to me 2012 NH.  While the wheels were off I inspected the Morryde IS and discovered that 2 of my rubber springs are totally gone.  So new ones ordered but havent had the shipment email yet so hoping I get them in time for my ~1400 mile drive to Hutch.  Come to discover that life expectancy is 7-15 years BUT just like tires, if they sit, that life can be shortened.  Well, I am 4th owner and learned that 2nd owner had it stationary in a park for 5+ years.  I have 3 coming and hoping I can get the repair done in time for travel, but IF I cant bring the trailer, working on options.  Not sure if Fairgrounds has available facilities if I just bring the truck.  Havent ever used the truck solely, but I know other have.

I believe Morryde is expected to attend.

Dollar store flexible cutting mats, inserted before the shoes make contact with the drums. Guaranteed fix, just a little bit of in and out exercise to install/remove. All the farm equipment gets it, if the equipment is going to sit more than a week.

    Great tip

  8. Not sure how this topic got so sideways to a Cali bashing(seems to happen often on this forum) BUT since I have lived here since '69, I like many, came from another place.  I take the approach to be respectful to all and want to learn about what you like about where you live rather than why you dislike where others(Cali specific) live.  This is not a political statement but one from my own perspective.  I enjoy this forum for the things I learn but struggle with OPINIONS based on OPINIONS.  I dont bash other states or countries, nor do I appreciate those that do.

It is best if we just follow the rules of the road and stay in our lanes.  I have made my life in Cali, am looking forward to living elsewhere but appreciate what my life has been here.  I respect those that have likewise made their lives where they live, esp if they have contributed in a positive way to their community.

Cant we all just get along??

  9. I've been a landlord for ~28 years and it has worked for us.  While there are things that affect our situation, we self-manage and have had to go to court to remove a couple tenants, but for the most part it has been a good experience.

It is something that we regard and run as a business so we get out of it what we put in.  Treat people right and it seems it works OK for the most part.  Having been self-employed for over 3 decades, this is where we have chosen to put some of the investment dollars that we had when available.  It is becoming more of a responsibility that affects our travels as we are getting closer to being able to travel more, but the rewards require work, so we look forward to the ROI as we know that SS will not be all we need esp moving forward.

We all can make our own choices!

    Is this normal with them.

So what is your basis for comparison?  Another hitch?  What is it?

Not sure what a Sidewinder key is, but, on our '12 Volvo 670 I found a match for our key @ Lowes. It was labeled 19r1 (Chrysler product) or a 19r2. Had them make a couple keys for me & both worked in ignition & door.

Same for my '08.  Used a local to me locksmith and no programming necessary.

Based on a lot of years of observation, the time is seldom one of age. I have known people of a very wide range in ages who were still on the road and others simply park the RVin a favored location and stop travel but continue to make the RV their home. Some folks move into a park model, which technically is an RV and live out their last years in an RV community. For us, the decision was not one of age but health issues and family circumstances. For one of our most active forum participants(Stanley Miller) that time came at about 65 because he needed to give some grandchildren a stable homelife. Another former fulltimer friend left the road because of financial reversals caused him to stop travel and return to part-time work in his early 60's. We also know a couple who left the road at 82 & 85 because they believed that it was time to stop driving a big rig. I think that the oldest fulltimer I have known was traveling alone in a class A after losing the spouse at the age of 89. That was several years ago and I don't know if they are still traveling. I was fortunate to have worked where I was able to take full retirement with health benefits at the age of 57 and we did just that. We bought our dream RV about a year before that and when the day of eligibility arrived we were gone! Our original goal was to stay fulltime for 15 years but at year 12 my wife needed a complete ankle replacement which kept her off of her feet for nearly 4 months and a full year of recovery so we bought a home in an RV community and returned to seasonal RV travel. At that time I was 69 and Pam was 70. Just a month ago we sold what is most likely our last truck and travel trailer at the ages of 80 & 81. It was not an easy decision, since we bought our first RV in 1973 and had owned some type for all but a couple of very brief periods since then. (We were married for 60 years last December.)

Thank you for sharing your journey of life.  Congrats on your life and longevity.  I am inspired as I sit here at 65, married for 45 and wondering how to spend some significant time on the road seeing this country before I cant.

  13. BUT, lets also include the fact that RVs depreciat about 20%+ when driven off the lot but houses tend to appreciate, and IF they(houses) depreciate we are typically in an economic downturn.  Yes, warranties and quality of construction need to be addressed, both for houses and RVs, but these are the times we live in and what can we do about it?  I think the idea of buying used quality RVs from the days of old, just like many of us do with houses, will hopefully cause the manufacturers to realize that we are not willing to pay so much for so little, thus reducing the demand for new RVs.  Yes some manufacturers will close their doors, but that may not be solely a function of reduction of demand, because there are so many factors affecting a business' viability, but to cheapen your product and continue to sell at high prices and then add the workmanship issues on top of that, well, we have to affect change, after all, we have the power as consumers.

  14. Put that same $ away every month in a fund to pay for a tow.  IF that is needed, you have the cash, IF NOT needed then you have some nice dinner cash at the end of the year.
