  2. Thanks all,

We're currently in Bismarck ND, next job is in Milwaukee.  We need to be outa our current place Saturday, but can't check into the Milwaukee fair grounds until Friday.

We have a days worth of housekeeping in Sioux Falls, but then we're free for the week.  With as expensive as fuel has gotten, I was intending on staying on our route with an extra couple days spent somewhere inbetween.

On our maiden voyage with the Volvo, back in July 2010, our leveling valve rod popped off the little "knob".  I repaired it with a zip tie, fashioned into a figure "8" around it and the arm.  It was still there when I sold the truck.  Got a DOT inspection and the mechanic criticized my repair.  I responded that it had lasted longer than the factory part, and showed no signs of wear.

I think mine is still that way.... had to replace the valve, but used the old arm since it was already "Adjusted".

  4. Most of the competition diesel racing either big rigs or pick ups, over fuel the engines to keep cylinder temps under control.  They don't have enough cooling capacity to handle the HP developed without the extra fuel going in.

On the trailer. Had to get the shackles straightened on our first trip. I still think I bought it that way and missed it when I did my inspection. 🤦‍♂️

Box the shackles so they can't bend side to side.

Oregon signs say "all trucks over 20,000lbs must exit" at the scales. I emailed the Oregon motor carrier division about my class 8 rv. They called my phone, which I had included in the email, and told me they would know everything about me before the weigh in motion scale. What my title says, if I'm current with tags etc. They asked that I please not clog the scale lines, and drive on. For Oregon, ASK ODOT is a great resource.

If you want to know before you go, simply email or call the state you wish to pass through. I'd rather email as then you have hard copy of the official's reply.

If you not running the I-Pass or similar commercial transponder, I wonder how they would know who or what you are?

  7. Rod-

We had the same questions a year ago and our answers came down to repair it. Our issue was a bad ECM ($1800x2), a worn out clutch $5400 (clutch, pressure plate, other parts and pieces), and a worn out front end ($2800). Our rig has 600k on it now.  So our decision was can we sell it as is and buy something better?  Trade the truck and DRV for a coach?  Or repair it... With as expensive as the truck market is, and since I'm still working we have to have a "mobile" home to move to the next projects, we decided to put roughly $12k into a truck that we bought for $19k.  We considered me taking a permeant position on a project, but rent, lease, or buy is stupid expensive now and you have to live somewhere.

I'd find a shop, maybe not Volvo, and see if they can chase the gremlins down.  I agree that its a harness issue, probably a wire getting old or rubbed thru.  Possible a connector that is corroding inside but clean outside.

This is a very true statement; I feel this way every year just before we start traveling.

Yup! Agree!  You will be listening to everything.  Then after a couple of hours, it will fade to normal background.

I'm the exact opposite.... if I don't hear the rattles and squeaks I know to stop and see what fell off....

  9. How is the truck titled? Most insurance companies with insure private truck, or a truck that has been retitled as an RV.  Call your current agent and tell them what you want to do.
