  1. How are we supposed to stay the course?!? That works if you're working for a living. But we've "stayed the course" for years, lost and gained, and were fine. We're retired now and live off our investments. Or used to. Lost 16K just last quarter. If we stayed the course, our piddly little pension would be gone in a VERY short time. So- what are we supposed to do?!? Only one answer that I can see. Vote. For the right people.

    That's what I thought.

We're getting cable Internet installed next week.  Once it's installed, we're going to do a bunch of streaming to try it out and see if it will really work for us (we've been trying to use our Visible phone as a hotspot, with mixed results).  If it does, we'll cancel Dish and just use Dish Outdoors for those months in the winter that we are down in Arizona because we'll have no way of streaming (on the TV) while we're in the RV (we have a 12-volt TV that came with our 2014 Class C and I don't think it has an HDMI slot for our Amazon Fire Stick (although we haven't been down to the rig yet to check it out).

I'll miss the ability to tape shows while we're watching something else that we have with the Hopper 3, but I guess I'll learn to live with it! 😁

Good luck to you! It does my heart good to hear when somebody is able to get  rid of DISH.

  3. The Witchita Hills area in Oklahoma. Nothing extraordinary, it was just a beautiful, quiet place that took me back a hundred years. Nobody around, buffalo and longhorns wandering all over the place, and some nice little fishing lakes. Not real unique, but an adventure. But unique wise- nothing in the world was more impressive to me than coming around the corner and seeing Lake Powell for the first time. And even more impressive from a plane. (sorry- did I hijack this thread?! )

Here's another option, the first box is a 50 gal aux tank but it can be a large tool box, the second one is a box designed for a short box so its tapered at the bottom for the hitch. The other two are 10" side boxes. The hitch has been replaced by a Pullright SuperLite so its really easily removed.

I would never go to a TT because of the lack of storage when compared to a 5th wheel.

Not to get off-topic, but wow Denny! That's a sharp looking rig!

Here, south of Frostproof, FL, we were "cold" for a few days - 30's at night and mid-50 to 70's.  Yesterday was 82 and sunny.  Last night was 58 with low humidity.  Yesterday we went to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. We prepared by making a picnic lunch and remembering the sunscreen.

Ahh, kids now days........  El Nino and La Nina have been occurring a bit longer than that, but you can't core the oceans to find direct evidence.

Yeah, us kids don't know s#%t. Though I'm most likely older than you. Probably been around for thousands of years, so, but it wasn't identified or called "El Nino" til the 1990s, and the term "El Nina" came later.

  7. Our family had some property on the Walker River when the first El Nino hit back in the 90s. All the snow melted at one time and totally flooded everything in the vicinity of the eastern Sierras. Reno was just about under water. Hwy. 395 was closed through Walker Canyon for 2 years. Our beautiful piece of property was wiped out; the river is now a ditch that looks like the LA river. As soon as the flooding started, some guy hired a helicopter to video tape the whole thing. It's pretty awesome. The only thing is, it's on VHS. Definitely hope for no El Nino.

Just IMHO in having spent the last 20 years or so winters visiting Q, but expecting someone to come out and service you kind of defeats the spirit of staying in a boondocking area.  Even if they're scheduled, they're likely to be in short supply during the peak weeks as the demand increases.  You just can't build the kind of infrastructure necessary to provide that level of support for the number of people who are only there for a week or two.

Good Lord man- I just want to be able to empty my tanks as needed; this isn't some kind of spiritual journey. I might just stay longer than a week or two. But thanks for the input.

If you're only spending 2 weeks why not use the free areas rather than the long-term.  We love Scaddan Wash area.  There are always RV pumpout trucks roaming through these areas.  Once you're there talk to others or go to the CofC/Visitor's Center to ask for some phone numbers.

That's a great idea. We're certainly not set on any particular place. We will definitely check that out. Another related question- I know you guys have been there a lot- is there someplace to unhook my fiver and then look around for a place to camp, or do we just drive around hooked up til we find a spot? Thanks everybody for all the replies!

Compared to highly processed terrestrial FM radio, it's at least as good as that, and doesn't fade as you travel, and most of the music channels have no ads.

Compared to a loss-less audiophile quality (analog or digital) musical recording played on a good hi-fi tube amplifier and high quality speakers with lots of headroom, and listened to in a good acoustically neutral sound room by a young person with damn good ears, well of course XM/Sirius wont sound as good. 🙉

Is that a valid reason for a seasoned adult (with typical seasoned adult ears) to NOT listen to it in the average RV or tow vehicle as they cross multiple counties heading to their favorite camping spot?

Hold up your hand if you were told and believed that XM radio was designed and engineered for the musical purists out there?

    None?

    Didn't think so.

It's a good alternative to multipath-prone terrestrial FM radio as one travels across the USA and some of us even listen to it at home! Horrors!

Totally agree. I do have a real audio system at home, but that's for listening to my vinyl. I also have regular FM of course in my vehicles and home, but it's really horrible. Sounds like AM from the 70's; they even censor the music. Satellite radio is compressed, but I can live with that, if nothing else except for no commercials. I pay around $5.00 a month per subscription. Even compressed, it sounds pretty good.

(If you want to hear some REALLY good music- check out the Outlaw Country station. Give it a few times listening, and you'll be pleasantly surprised...)

Updated COVID-19 Precautions for Escapees Events

Thanks for the info Kirk. That's pretty much it for me and the Escapees RV club; I will not be renewing.  I have been vaccinated. Without getting political, I  will not get herded into this "You gotta be/You better be" mentality. This is still America. Barely. And yes, I understand this is a choice, and it's the one I'm choosing.

  12. I'm not quite sure what you're asking or what you're looking for. But you can buy a SIRIUS/XM boom box off of Ebay for a fairly inexpensive price. We pay just over $5.00 a month for each device- 1 each in our 2 vehicles and 1 for a home unit. There is something for everybody on SIRIUS and most of their receivers have the capability of retro-play. If you know what I mean. Hope this helps a little...

Get Freecampsites.net and that will show you a number of good boondocking sites. I will say that boondocking is getting very popular this year, big crowds in many of the publically known spots.

We have camped outside both Tetons and YNP in the last two years. And probably will do so again this summer after the Escapade. You may want to look us up at the Escapade..

We will definitely try to look you up, and really appreciate the offer. Thanks so much for the info! Can't wait for the Escapade. And thank you, too, Kirk!

  14. We are heading to the Escapade in July and plan on heading north afterwords towards the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone with no reservations. We're looking for any info as to where we may be able to boondock for a few days before heading east. Any info will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
