  1. I’ve seen many “professional” car haulers secure vehicles that way. It works but I would be wary of scratching the rims if the wheels or straps are dirty. I’ve never done it myself, I didn’t want the customer or dealer scrutinizing my work that hard. Should be easier than baskets though. Nigel
  2. Funny I have the opposite problem. Every time I see Ontario I think it is someone close and then get disappointed. Yes we must remember most of the members here will be Americans. When I see CN I think railway or tower so CDN is probably better. Nigel
  3. Slixter pm sent. Do four of the seven usual things and swear out an affidavit. No inspection required but make sure you have the required stuff in case you ever get a roadside check. Welcome to the site Nigel
  4. I know a fellow near me that had a couple of 08 Volvo’s with the i-shift. He said they were excellent until about 550,000 miles and then he had all kinds of transmission issues that the local dealer threw lots of parts at them and eventually he had the transmissions replaced and then sold them soon after. So I don’t think the transmission being replaced is a bad thing and if there is warranty that could be a bonus. I don’t know about the turbo maybe someone else has knowledge. Nigel
  5. Carl is good that way. Last year he had snow for us Canadians and rain for those from the northwest. Nigel
  6. No Facebook here either. When David gets a chance can they be put on the East Coast Rally site? Thanks Nigel
  7. runaway parents. I think you could do exactly that but don’t forget to push in the red trailer service knob or you will have no trailer brakes, not quite idiot proof. Nigel
  8. Luke The fellow that did mine disconnected one line at a time until he found one that had air coming out of it only when the brake pedal was pushed. That will be suitable to t into. I suspect one of the small lines going into the black firewall pass thru will work as the pressure transducers are on the inside of the pass thru. Mine is t’d into one of the larger lines right above the steering column but my truck is a couple of thousand miles away so I can’t tell you which one. Nigel
  9. Could use a little more info. Tire size, how many (assume 8 ) and what is your state tax rate. Around here you can get Yokohama or BFG 11R 22.5 installed for about $475 Canadian each plus our outrageous tax of 13%. Off brand Chinese would be about 300. I think generally truck tires are cheaper here when you factor the exchange rate. If you have a nearby state with a much better tax rate it may be worth taking a vacation out of state and buying tires there. Nigel
  10. Here is a link to the math. I took their course about 25 years ago and I had forgotten most of it. Keep in mind the winch rating is for the first wrap of rope and decreases as you add layers. Since there is little difference in price between two and three thousand pound winches I would suggest the larger. I’m always a little suspect on Chinese ratings. http://certifiedtowtraining.wreckmaster.com/blog/how-to-calculate-resistance-for-towing-recovery Nigel
  11. I have heard of fuel in the oil because of bad injectors on powerstrokes.
  12. You could try talking to Jack or Marc at http://rvhlifestyles.com/contact/ I’m pretty sure they have done at least one for a customer. Jack would normally be one of the first guys to help on the forum but since he started the business he must be careful not to be seen promoting the business when responding or risk getting banned. It is a loss of a resource for the newbie but those that have been around know to contact him directly. Nigel

    How is Nigel Doing

Thanks guys. In Lyndhurst rehab in Toronto probably the best spinal cord rehab in the country. They will give me a proposed exit date later this week but I expect it will be 6 to 8 weeks and many more months of out patient rehab. Should be able to walk unsupervised in another week or so. Hands and arms have the most deficiencies but expect good outcome with time. I have had some good luck since the fall from the paramedic that changed hospitals because the first didn’t have a neuro surgeon on to the team that did spinal decompression surgery in the middle of the night as soon as they noticed I lost movement in my extremities and the American surgeon who told the insurance company they weren’t bringing me home before the surgery. Also can’t thank Roger Dickenson enough for moving my truck and trailer to storage until we can get back out west and Carl for the phone call. It was a freak accident but emphasizes the need for your spouses to be able to drive your rigs. Nigel
  15. Jason Are saying yours failed partially applied? Also your estimate on the rebuild kit is about six or seven hundred Canadian dollars low. I just went through this with the dealer yesterday as well as the air valve, time to skip town before credit card bill comes in. I am not a mechanic but I see no reason not to gut governor or at least weld it open if it is causing problems. Nigel
  16. Carl The exhaust brake you should really be able to feel in the lower gears. As you are slowing down flip the switch on and off, if no difference it is not working. Mine went out a few years ago and it turned out to be the air valve exhaust pressure governor (I think that is the right name). Very pricey the better part of a thousand dollars at the dealer about half that on eBay. The dealer has the ability to cycle it with their scan tools. I don’t know if your independent garage can check it as easily but ask anyway. Nigel
  17. I had this data link problem with my Volvo last year. It had a Peoplenet unit (similar to Qualcomm) removed three years earlier. When it was removed they didn’t remove the T connection at the nine pin data connector but just cut the data cable at the unit and tucked the wires under the floor. After three years of being stepped on the wires shorted on each other and caused my issues. Removed the T and wire and all is good. There may be T connection on yours and the nine pin you are seeing may not be the factory connector. Nigel

    Webasto cab heater

Al my thoughts exactly. That is why I plan on visiting a truck dealer and see what they use. Nigel

    Webasto cab heater

Al I’ve been bad. Haven’t changed mine in six years and for the first two I used to turn the heater on in November and turn it back off the beginning of April. Sounds like a project for the ECR. It looks like the filter number is Webasto 1319466A. If I get near a dealer I’ll see if that is the number they use or if there is a cross reference. So for the little use you need I think 3 or 4 years would be more cost effective. Also anytime it is cool and I’m taking the truck out I turn on the bunk heater before I start the truck. That way the cab is toasty when I leave. Heats the cab way quicker than the engine heat. Nigel
  21. I had a similar issue this spring. Mine would lose prime and I would have to use the primer pump to get it started but once going it was fine. It did this for a few weeks then fixed itself when I dropped the truck at the mechanics. Kind of like when I go to the Doctor. I suspect it was a sticky check valve. I don't understand the fuel was only about seven months old. Nigel
  22. Do a search on YouTube for a Condor cycle loader and see if something like that would help. I used to know a few guys who used them with tilt and load trucks but I never actually saw one being loaded. Nigel

    Sudden Slow Start

Should be on the top of the fuel filter bracket. Loosen knob pump in and out till getting stiff and push in and tighten knob. Nigel
  24. I think the most common place to get ready made ramps is http://www.discountramps.com/auto_ramps/c/4120/ They ship extremely quick. I think mine came across the border and were at my door within 48 hours. Nigel
