I am headed south. Left Indiana this morning. Stopped just south of Nashville for the evening and will be near Atlanta tomorrow night and in SC on Sunday.

Cathy and I arrived at the ABQ Balloon Fiesta grounds yesterday afternoon. We will be here with the Boomer's group until Monday 10/10. Fiesta actually starts Saturday, but already had a lot of balloons in the air this morning. This is our first Boomer activity and we are enjoying meeting these fine folks almost as much as we do our fellow HDT'rs. I know folks travel farther, but it did not make sense logistically to try to do this, leave early for the rally in Hutch, then return to to AZ were we plan to Winter. On a social/emotional level, we are really feeling bad about not being with you in Hutch this year.

This is our first extended dry camping experience. So far so good. (Knock on wood!)

Been in Florence SC for a little more than a week. Going to pack up and move NW later today to avoid the storm. Hopefully I will be back on Monday. Should have gone to the Rally! Luckily though a fellow HDT'r is coming to our rescue and is letting me park at his place this weekend. I will update later after I arrive.

  • 2 weeks later...

Arrived Las Vegas NV for the winter today. A long 2 day drive with strong headwinds for most of the trip. 1st night we Boondocked at the truck stop (good fuel price) across from Double Eagle Casino NM, we were to big for the small RV Park. Tried the Casino Slots for a little diversion, we lost then won breaking even.

Heading back to Florida today after great shakedown trip taking in another great Rally and visiting family and friends. We're overnighting in Cartersville, Ga after 700 mile day. Memorable part of trip today was seeing David Dixon southbound on I-24 just north of Nashville . . . passing us slowpokes.

We are in Albuquerque for at least one week as we change out all 5 of our 614's to new 114's coming from trailertireandwheels in OH. Today going into ABQ proper to order all new tires for the Volvo even though they look good the drives are 8 years old and the steers are 5 years old. Wondering how to properly dispose of my Rig's 16" wheels and tires???

Spent these first 4 days at Leisure Mountain in the foothills of ABQ and tomorrow we move to High Desert RV Park on the west side of ABQ for the following week before we head down to Elephant Butte for another couple of weeks before winter parking in Amado AZ at DeAnza Trails RV Resort. We'll see a lot of you along the Colorado River from Yuma to Quartzite starting in January and then the Escapees Escapade in Tucson next March! Had the best first Rally we could hope for in Hutch. Thank you all for your welcomes, tips, seminars & fun.. Especially to Trey and Susan for their hard work and excellent guidance on our Wheel/Tire woes.

Arrived at Last Chance Peak (East of Death Valley) Freightshaker ran flawlessly for the 850 mile run down the outback roads from Bend, OR.

Arrived at dusk after the cargo trailer pulled by the DW lost a tire due to hitting a sharp piece of angle iron in her lane. I changed to the spare and stopped to buy a new spare in Beatty before heading South again. Small tire shop called Desert Tire with a good selection. Of common size tires including HDT sizes with reasonable pricing considering you are well North of Vegas by a +100 miles. Nice chap and he works fast to get you on the road again.

Unloaded Dolly-the-paint-horse into her pen and a Roadrunner strolled our in front of her and a hour later Wiley Coyote and frends sang us a good night song under starry skies.....

Drive on.......(Starry night skies .....good camp)

Campground in north bend Ohio for a few more days then heading to Kansas. Came back from shopping in the rental and two spots over is a red gen1 Volvo with a smart on the back as well. Never saw the owners yet but had SD plates. Hoping I can catch them before I head to a conference tomorrow morning.

Yesterday, Cathy and I arrived at Western Way RV Resort in Tucson, where we plan to spend our Winter.

The bad news is that the one Palm tree on site is perfectly lined up with our roof top sat dish. Site is plenty wide with space for truck and smart on the other side of a concrete patio, but probably not long enough to move trailer forward enough for sat to clear the tree as it is. We hugged the far side of site to get most stations by "looking" over the Palm. Mgmt plans to prune the trees and then maybe a slight move forward will clear the frons.

The good news is that we had many residents come over to welcome us and offer any help we needed. Not one, but two, offered to loan us their portable sat dish for the Winter! We have one ourselves that will work with a little repair and learning how to point it, so we should not need to borrow one, but it felt really great to get such a warm welcome here. The management has been great every time we called and again when we arrived and set up yesterday. It is clear that they really want to cooperate and make our stay enjoyable. Everyone seems very happy to spend their Winters here.

Bottom line is that Cathy and I are very optimistic we will enjoy our stay here.

That was us. Did get to chat briefly with the Lady of your house as we were pulling out. We are from Evergreen SKP park in Chimacum, Wa and headed to St Augustine, FL after an early Thanksgiving visit with our kids in NC on the way down. Maybe cross paths again somewhere but not likely to be anywhere near Kansas in the winter months, for sure.
