Jeff & Suzanne
Our original plans were to meander down to South Texas for the winter, but we have made a major change in those plans. We're going to hang around in the DFW area until late March. We're going to put our Foretravel up for sale in about a week or so, and if we haven't sold it by mid-March, we'll take it down to Motorhomes of Texas and put it on consignment. Yep, you heard right, we're getting off the road. I know we did it once before, and we thought that it was final then, but God gave us the ability to get back on the road, and now we've had an additional two years and then some that I wouldn't take for anything. At this point in our lives, we know that Jeff needs more consistent care from his doctors that he has been getting by just showing up once a year at the Great Lakes VA, and seeing various doctors along the road. Since his best medical care has always been at the Great Lakes VA, and since our son and his wife live in the Chicago area, we've made the decision to buy a small house in Homewood, Illinois. I know, I've heard about the winters there - in fact, Jeff and I got married on the Great Lakes Base in November and went through most of a winter there, so we know what it's like, but we also have a lovely daughter in Texas with whom we can snowbird if the winter gets too bad. We plan on continuing to travel, only doing it by train, plane and automobile, and taking shorter jaunts of 2-3 weeks instead of months. So, our time in the RV is coming to an end. Wow, what a great chapter in our lives. We started full-timing in 2006 in the Airstream travel trailer, moved into an apartment in the fall of 2008, and were back on the road in our wonderful Foretravel motorhome in the fall of 2009. During all this time, we have seen so many great and wonderful things - memories which will never be taken away - I don't regret for one instant our decision to fulltime in our two RV's. We'll miss it, that's for sure, and we'll miss all the many RV friends we have made along the way. Just know that we'll be homebasing in Homewood, IL and there's an RV park in Joliet at the Hollywood Casino, so all of our RV friends can come see us and we'll show you the Windy City. So, that's the end of the Two Hams in a Can as Rvers. . .and the blog. Thanks for reading, and all the friendships over the years. adagadak
Hams! Can this be right, are you REALLY leaving the road? Oh how we will miss you!! Please give me your address when you get all settled in, I have never been to that state or that part of the country and plan to make the trip someday. Prop Jeff's feet up on something soft, put the Travel Channel on the tv and give him a beer; he'll be fine. foggymtn
Hams...sorry to see that you will be pulling off the road, but we will all be there sooner or later. We hope to find you along the way sometime. Steve...good to see that everything has improved for you and we hope to find you along the way. After 4 months in Mesa, AZ we are heading to Congress for a couple of days, Kingman for an overnighter and the SKP Pair-A-Dice park in Pahrump, NV for a week or more. From there we will slowly work our way back up to the Oregon Coast where we will spend the summer in Port Orford. If anyone is traveling along Hwy 101 this summer, please stop by. The many wineries in eastern Washington are calling out for a visit this fall and we haven't made any decisions for next winter at this point. Safe travels everyone!! adagadak
Greeting to all and thanks for all the prayers and kind wishes. I'm laying pretty low for now. Still have follow-up appointments to deal with. The cancer is all gone but the effects of the cancer and the treatment will be with me for awhile...some forever. I plan on going to the WARE next month, that will be my first ralley in a year. After that I'm not doing much until Nov. when I want to hit the 49'er gathering in Death Valley and then on to Quartzsite. Hope to see you all down the road...maybe 2013 if not in Quartzsite. Barbaraok
After 4 1/2 months in the desert, we made it to the west coast (and moisture) yesterday! Even had rain in Palm Springs on Friday (along with a LOT of wind). Starting our trek up the coast, should take us about 6 weeks to get to Oregon and Washington - so many wineries, so little time. RobertShelly
Good to hear some updates! Shelly & I traveled over to Benson last week, visiting Dave & Diane for 5 days. It's always great to see them and our Classmates! Had a nice trip over to Wilcox for wine tastings, YUM! 9 bottles later, we were happy . Back in Tucson (for about 1 more month), Shelly & I attended the first annual Wine Growers Festival in Elgin, AZ Sunday. Not bad but room for improvement. Oh and wanted to let the group know about a scary deal we had last month with our fridge. I came home from a bike ride to a strong Ammonia smell in the coach, I immediately knew it was the fridge, ran outside and pulled the cover. Fridge (Norcold 1200LR) still running with leaking ammonia from the burner flue and she was supper HOT too. Thank god I came home when I did as Shelly was sleeping in the back! Check out the YouTube video we put together of us changing the cooling unit and the damage: PS check out the pics from our mini class reunion in Mesa back in Jan: https://picasaweb.go...feat=directlink Our plans are to explore UT and western CO this summer. Tugg-n-Ridley
Judy and I got to work together again this winter in Mississippi and we were thinking of when we first volunteered together early in 2007. We were discussing how many we thought there were of us are still hotfooting it around this country? The last 6 years have been something! lindewoman
Hey, Class! Are any of you on your way to Escapade? It has been a few years since our travels coincided with one, but they are always fun. Let us know if you will be there! We are finishing up our stint in Lancaster Ohio as camp hosts near a bunch of our kids-n-grands. They have filled our HOT summer with delight, but it is time to move on. We need to be in south Texas by October 16 to start training at Santa Ana NWR, where we will be tram interpreters for the 3rd time. Biscayne NP last winter was fantastic. We were required to paddle a canoe with a bunch of curious people once a week and lead another bunch of people out into the Florida Keys on a bigger boat another day. The third day we gave talks and worked the visitor center. We went snorkeling in the reef anytime we felt like it. (free) Only downside was NO cellphone/aircard signal. And in view of downtown Miami, across the bay. Who would have even asked about it? Would love to get together at Escapade or in south Texas this winter. Jeff & Suzanne
As most of you know, we had to give up the RV lifestyle due to health reasons. We have not, however, given up traveling. We will be taking an Alaskan Cruise starting this Sunday which we actually signed up for as FMCA members. (You can take the couple out of the RV, but . . . .) Hope all of you are well. Enjoy the lifestyle while you can!
