a brake buddy is how I am going

You have made a good decision. Set up properly the Brake Buddy will serve you well and you will be far more safe in an emergency.

I use a ready stop break-away system. It is simple, reliable and inexpensive. So far so good, but you should check the cables often for rusting as I have heard of them rusting through after several years of exposure to the elements. It is designed to complement the Ready Brake or Brute system.
