Structural strength of sleeper

Can someone provide info on a 1999 Freightliner FLD 48" sleeper?

A couple options for remodeling our sleeper would involve removing the boxed in bases along the drivers and passenger sides that supported the bunk.

It appears they might contribute to the overall strength and integrity of the sleeper itself, but I don't know if that is actually the case. Can any of you verify whether the bases can be removed without compromising the strength of the sleeper?

In this sleeper there is also a piece of aluminum bolted to the floor side to side behind the seats, just behind where the curtain would hang. It doesn't look like a factory install and may be something that was added in by previous owners. Can you verify whether or not the factory installed a brace across the sleeper floor on the inside?
