Custom 5th wheel build

Star Dreamer

Recommended Posts

Our custom 5th wheel toy hauler build has started. It is just under 47' long, three 8k axles, designed to handle a 6000# vehicle in the 20' plus garage, has 2 slideouts and will have residential appliances. It is being built in Arizona by Dune Sport RV.

Do they make their own frames? How long is the build time?

No, unfortunately at this time they use Lippert frames. There is a welding shop at their location that helps them correct issues that Lippert didn't do so good on. In our case, that shop modified our frame to have the dove tail end which was missed by Lippert.

Build time once they get it in the shop is about 2-1/2 weeks but they do a lot of pre-work. We put our deposit down about 3 months ago, do total time should by about 14 weeks but varies based on what units are going thru the shop. They had a few large builds before ours that slowed them down but worked great for our timing to get here to see it built.

Star - good looking project keep us in the peanut gallery posted.

2gypsies - I think Star’s tow mobile can handle a little ol 47 footer...

Yep, I think our little Freightliner will have no issue pulling or stopping it.

Our current set up.

Is the trailer going to be completed for you to make the Rally in Hutchinson?

ShortyO

Trailer has been completed, we picked it up Friday. Unfortunately we have to be back in South Carolina the first week of October and won't be able to head back to Kansas to go to the National Rally this year.

You got solar on that thing or just a generator?

We have 400 watts of solar panels on the roof. So far it has been keeping up with the inverter while we have been traveling during the day but we have had sunny days too.

Just curious....why the door on the drivers side?

They are specially located so we have escape doors when loading the vehicle in the garage. Our custom van that goes in there is 84" wide and there is no way to get out the door and walk down the side of the van to get past the vehicle.  We have a similar door on the passenger side , located differently, to allow us to use it if we load our SUV in the garage. They use these same doors, just lower to the floor for their handicap lifts that they use when doing a handicap accessible trailer.

Star Dreamer - did you sell the trailer shown in your profile picture?

The one in our profile picture was a 2005 44' Vintage that we traded in on a 2017 48' Cargomate. We still have the Cargomate and it is for sale. There is a picture of it in my post on August 31st which looks very similar to the one in our profile picture. Let me know if you want some information on it.

I waffle between a high in the wind rig for ground clearance and a low out of the wind rig for better fuel mpg, comfort and handling...

oh and my baby 8 KW tow dually is just a little fella...

Definitely the lower height has it advantage and disadvantages, advantage is it the truck has height clearance the trailer will too! Disadvantage is the head room clearance above the bed in the gooseneck.you do alot of crawling up there unless you are real short!

Thanks, One other nice thing about those wider doors, is they have door screens just like the smaller doors so we can open them up and have a large cross ventilation system going. Regular escape doors are typically just a large door opening without a screen.
