To grease or not to grease

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to the thinking on greasing a Binkly hitch head.

On top of the hitch is the tool I use to grease the underside of the hitch head. Was just reading the hitch post problem and wanted to share what I do.

Anything is better than nothing. I use a similar tool to get grease into the bottom of the head. Between the pins being in single shear, and  the inability to grease properly, the heads were designed as a wear item.

I just spray mine, with white Lithium grease from a can. Worked for years, and easy to do.

I used to spray with white lithium grease,  made a white gooey mess.  Now I put on a vinyl glove and have a jar of marine axle grease I smear everywhere on jaws etc.  Now I have a bluish black gooey mess 😜.  BTW word of caution, don’t hit your head on the trailer pin or it will make your Brylcreem days seem like child’s play.  Don’t ask me how I know.

This what I do for greasing that unknown area. No it is not a perfect way to do the job. But any grease in that area is better than none.

Some of that grease should find its way into moving parts. It can be aimed at the pivot points of the jaws, top and bottom. Also it can be pointed at the rotating pins also.

Along time ago I had a good friend come buy for a month or so to visit. So we got there fifthwheel positioned in place. Went to unhook and it would not unlatch.

Now this guy is very smart on mechanical things. Just never bought grease. I do not think he even had a grease gun. If he did I never seen it..

In another business I had for years I would look at used equipment for sale. So it was either new ( no grease at bearings ), or used and lots of grease at the bearings. But the worst thing was a used piece of equipment with rust at the moving parts.

Jjjjust  need to explain it better,.   Vern

I grew up on a poor dirt farm. But dad did not save $$ on Oil or grease. 2 stroke outboard double oil. He told me plugs are cheaper then the engine. Commercial Fisherman also.

All farm tractors and combine. You got it if it called for grease every 20 hours. We did it every am. Did not matter if the combine only ran 4 hours the day before. When we sold all the old stuff. Every bearing was still good. Nasty looking but sure greased.

Today I grease everything more then needed. But keep it clean also. Ran up on a guy 3 years ago. Same Trailer saver hitch as mine. He was bragging it had been maintenance free for the last 6 years.🤬
