When were the first motorhomes made?

Recommended Posts

The Pierce-Arrow “Touring Landau,” was displayed in 1910. The first house car to be called a motorhome was on a Dodge truck chassis in 1953. Ray Frank built four of these first units and then raised capital to start “Frank's Motor Homes.” In the early 1960s, Frank connected with Chrysler to market his motorhomes under the brand name of Dodge.

There were custom built modifications where camping equipment and beds were added to touring cars and small trucks since the earliest days of automobiles.

The first manufacturer of what we'd consider a "modern" motorhome - self-contained and with bodies constructed on bare truck chassis - was Frank Motor Homes.  They made the Dodge Travco motorhome and their own Xplorer brands.

Xplorer Motorhomes is still around today and is an independent motorhome manufacturer.

While it wasn't what "We" consider a coach, I'm sure they had items that some thought were luxuries at that time.

The Vagabonds, consisting of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs, did not rough it too badly.  If you look at the third picture on the Henry Ford Museum site above, you will see that they took along a kitchen truck with a stove and icebox, plus a cook.  Another vehicle carried all of their tents, cots, and other camping supplies!  They also took a team of photographers.  Plus, I suspect they took along a few employees to set everything up and pick up after them, so I suspect they made quite a caravan heading down the road!!
