VA privatization latest battleground for congressional rising stars

"A pair of prominent freshman lawmakers offered sharply different views about the future of the Department of Veterans Affairs health care this week, bringing the ongoing debate over fears of department privatization to the next generation of elected leaders.

"The duo - Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Republican Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw - have both built national followings since their elections last fall, and recently have sparred directly over social media concerning rhetoric surrounding Muslims and the Sept. 11 attacks.

"But this week marked each legislator's first focused entry into VA policy discussions, and their comments suggested both will make those issues a key focus in months to come - with very different positions on the issue."

Career Skills Program prepares Airmen for employment after service

"The Air Force Career Skills Program, or CSP, prepares Airmen through vocational and technical training for a specific career or trade when transitioning from military to civilian employment.

"Master Sgt. Angela Santos, superintendent, Education and Technology Branch, Air Force Cryptologic Office, 25th Air Force, first heard about CSP from a friend and headed to the Transition Assistance Program office here, to learn more.

"'That is where I learned all I needed to about this program,' Santos said. 'The most important thing to know is that it is a self-initiated opportunity.'"

The Air Force Is on a Mission to Fix its Uniforms

"The U.S. Air Force for months has been working to redesign gear and flight suits used by female pilots after many years of ill-fitting equipment.

"But why stop there? It's also updating current flight suit and gear designs to improve comfort and ease of wear, according to officials working on the project. At the same time, officials want to streamline and expedite the process of shipping these uniforms and support gear anywhere across the world to meet a unit's requirement.

"Since his tenure in the Air Force, Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein has called for improved, better-fitting uniforms -- not only for comfort, but also for safety."

Congress wants more answers about VA campus suicides

"In response to the rising number of suicides in public places at Veterans Affairs medical facilities, lawmakers are considering legislation to mandate the department better track not only those deaths but also all suicide attempts on VA properties in an effort to better prevent them.

"On Thursday Rep. Max Rose, D-N.Y., an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, announced plans for a new bill mandating VA officials provide Congress with the medical, financial and housing situation of any veteran who dies by suicide at a department facility, giving lawmakers more insight into what may have preceded the death.

"'Getting this data more quickly and thoroughly would guide Congress' efforts in understanding this crisis and preventing these tragedies, Rose said in a statement. 'We must ensure all veterans have the services they need when they need them, plain and simple.'"
