Louisiana US 90

I was thinking about taking US 90 west from New Orleans to get into Cajun Country. 90 from the Mississippi line into New Orleans was pretty bad. There were some low bridge weights although it’s still a designated truck route on my Motor Carriers Atlas. Anyone know what I can expect or should I just drop down from I-10?

US 90 is not too bad from New Orleans until you get near Lafayette where it gets a little congested and the last few miles in Lafayette are very busy and narrow lanes.  Still no big deal - we often travel that route.

Hwy. 90 is rough through Lafayette, expansion joints. But it's only about 35mph so you can go slower. Then smooths out until a few miles out of Lafayette to just past New Iberia.  Then it's pretty good all the way to New Orleans.  All 4 lane but unrestricted with some stop lights.  Not bad traffic usually.

If you have time to sightsee take Hwy. 182 after Jeanerette then pick up 90 again in Calumet.  There are some beautiful 1800's houses in Franklin.

Then when you get to Amelia (just past Morgan City) drop down to Hwy. 182 (old 90) and drive that to Gibson and pick up 90 again.  You'll see some nice swamp scenery on that section.

Thanks - your replies are encouraging, I think we’ stick with the original plan. I would definitely avoid US 90 east of New Orleans to the Mississippi line.though. It’s a shame because it sure was scenic.

90 West from New Orleans out to New Iberia was ok. Not great, but ok. Sections were good, others were torn up with patches or rough from expansion joints. I would take it again rather than I-10. The best road we found in Louisiana was Rt. 82 south out of Abbeville and the west along the coast to Texas. Super smooth, absolutely no traffic to speak of. Great free beachfront camping at Rutherford Beach too. I checked with county sheriff about bridges and they said no problem but 1 was posted for 10 tons.
