RV campground in Yuma and dental recommendations in Mexico advice needed

Howdy All,

We are enjoying our first ever winter camping staying at the Quail Run RV Park in Quartzsite we’ll be leaving here March 2nd.  Donna wants to get some dental work done, we have heard that across the border from Yuma a person can get quality work done at reasonable prices.

So if any one can offer suggestions of a big rig friendly RV Park in the Yuma area and a dental service that is trustworthy we sure would appreciate it, thanks.

Dave, Donna and Newt

PS. We are having a GREAT time ripping up the desert with the Sidexside, we have become friends with others in the campground that have this type of toy, life is truly pretty darn good.

There's a SKP park in Yuma. I've never been there though. http://www.kofako-op.com/

I usually boondock out at American Girl Mine so I haven't stayed at any parks in Yuma.

Los Algodones is where people go across to get dental work done. Lots of options for dental. Some of the better ones require appointments, others are just walk ins.  Some friends just had some dental work done. $30-$40 for regular cleaning. A bit more if you need a deep cleaning.

You park in a parking lot on the US side and walk across. Try to go early and get back early or lines can be long coming back.

Mr. Cob, I've used Drs. Camacho in Algodones for 15 years. They are directly across the border on the left in a grey block building. It is a family practice. Their shingle out front says "Pediatric Dentistry" but they do anybody. They were originally recommended to us by the folks at Kofa SKP Park. The Indian parking lot at the border is $6.00 per day.

By March 2 there will be some folks starting to head to the northern snowbanks for some reason.  Check out Carefree Village on 8 1/2 E. About 5 years old and many amenities. There are about 73 RV parks in the Yuma Area. Pick up a copy of the WhiteSheets in Q as I believe that is the Yuma edition and there are several RV parks with ads in there. Also, also there is private lots available to rent and are great if bringing toys. If I can be of more help, just PM me.

We always camped at the Imperial Dam Long Term Visitor area.  Mucho room for any size rig and very reasonable rates.  Water and sewage dump near the headquarters.  $40.00 for two weeks and $180 for 7 months.  This is dry camping and lots of places to ride.

Howdy Dan,

Thanks for your reply. I don’t know for sure but I think Donna is looking at getting a partial lower plate done I am encouraging her to do some online research but to be honest we really don’t know what to look for.  We are looking to stay for a few days in a park I don’t want to deal with boondocking at this time.

Howdy Bob,

Thanks for your reply I am sure you have made our quest much easier.  I will have Donna check out the dentist you recommended and pick up the newspaper you suggested.

I went to Dr Para last year. Was recommended by the RV Park I was in at the time. Very clean. The Dr that treated me went to dental school in Chicago. She spoke good English but the dental assistant only spoke Spanish.

Hi Dave,

FWIW, hubby and I have been coming down from Alberta Canada to Los Algodones for dental work since 2009.   We have used mostly Clarissa Salazar for everything from a complete set of crowns ($2500) to extractions ($30 each), partials, cleanings and so on.   What we loved about Clarissa over the others we've tried is the attention to detail she spends on trying to get your "BITE" right, and the adjustments she does and has the technician on hand both at the initial setting when collected and the next day present for fitting and any adjustments which he did in her office.   Other bigger names we've used it's all been a rush or "extra" charges on top over what we were quoted.

We've learnt a tremendous amount over the years crossing the border.   The biggest one is that when you are approached by folks asking "dentist, eyes etc", they will want to take you to the office, even if you already have made contact, so they get quite a good "finders fee", which is added to your bill and you pay!   So DO NOT let anyone try to accompany you to your destination.   If you have an appointment with the dentist, let them know when you arrive through the turnstiles into Mexico and describe what you are wearing and someone will come and get you.   Los Algodones is very very small to get around, but is the Dentist capital of the universe it feels.   Lots of competition for your business, but again FWIW, we'd never have our dentistry done anywhere else now some 10 years later.   Full set of dentures for hubby $450 last year.

We always email a handful of dentists prior to coming for quotes on what we want and make sure we are comparing apples to apples, and we also know exactly from their directions where we are walking to once across.

Hope some of this might help you Dave.

FTW.

Upon Edit:   Forgot to mention that we ALWAYS dry camp overnight and sometimes as needed several at the Quechan Casino.   Huge parking, welcoming and best of all come out of their carpark turn right and within less than a mile you are parking in the lot ready to walk across the border ;)   Works like a charm every one or two years we've done it.

We've never stayed at a Yuma RV park since we stay at the Pilot Knob LTVA, or at the free area north on Ogilby Road.

However, we've used Sani Dental in Algodones and have been pleased with their work.

Thanks for your reply, yours and all the other replies are a wealth of information that will be of great service to us and I am sure others who have the same questions.

We've never run into anyone in Algodones who doesn't speak English...dentists, optometrists, people behind the counter at the Purple Store...they all speak English.  And signs are also in English.

The only thing you have to be prepared for as you walk through town to your destination are all the vendors trying to get you to buy something...they can be pretty aggressive at times.  And, whatever you do, don't take something proffered by a vendor...I learned that the hard way and will never make that mistake again!  Just smile, say no thanks, and keep walking.

Dave,

Another suggestion for RV Park is Rivers Edge in Winterhaven, CA.  Just off I-8 and probably about as close to Algodones as you will get without boon docking.  They are so close to Yuma there that they operate on AZ time.  LOL

If you want a break from the reading, here is some watching. Found these when we did a youtube search for ourselves.

AND

So as the second video shows, and something that you may already know, you can take the car to the border & park just before crossing on foot. An earlier start to the day may keep you out of the long line to cross back north. With some luck you may be able to get your dental done before March 2 to free up your travel plans.

Howdy rm.w/aview,

Thanks those were informative.

Howdy Joe,

Thanks it kinda depends on how long this will take if it’s only a couple of days we may just boondock if it will take longer we will probably get an RV site.

Howdy LindaH,

I have some experience with the vendors you speak of, my first time in Mexico was accompanying Donna and her Mom at a time share condo in Mazatlian.  One of the worst times of my life, surrounded by masses of people I didn’t understand armed troops by the truck load everywhere, beggars, shacks made from cardboard and scrap sheet metal, naked kids trying to sell you anything from a watch to their virgin sister, talk about flashbacks and to top it off some kind of festival with fire crackers going off day and night the full time we were there.

I retreated to the condo just to escape the sensory overload.  My wife and mother-in-law had no idea what was going on with me I was also wondering what the heck is happening as it took me by surprise but when I had time to digest the ordeal it all became clear in my mind I wasn’t in Mexico I was back in Vietnam.

So I am a bit amprehencive of being in that situation again but if I feel it coming on at least this time I will know what is happening and be better able to deal with it.

Bless you man,

Howdy Rocky,

Thank you, a blessing sure won’t do any harm and just might make this situation better.

I have spent time in Baja and didn’t have any problem’s but I wasn’t surrounded by mobs of people all clamoring and pushing themselves on me.

I don’t have all the required paperwork to bring Newt with me so I just need to put my mind in the right place before we go, it would be so much better if I could have Newt with me.

It's not that bad in Algodones.

You do, on occasion, see a military person or two with automatic weapons...our main experience with that was when we were in the Purple Store and they were apparently transferring money from the store to (the bank?).  I assumed the guys were there to protect the money as it made it's way out of the store.

We have seen beggars who appear to be indigenous people.  They sit on the ground, usually, and don't accost you.  We've never been bothered by them.  Sometimes, as you're waiting in line to return to the US, someone will walk by trying to sell something, but they're not pushy.

I do agree with those who say to go as early in the morning as possible and get out early.  The later in the day it becomes, the longer the lines to return to the US become.  Although in March it may not be as bad as it is earlier in the winter.
