Dying Salton Sea, contributing factor

I recall visiting the Salton Sea back in the mid 1980s and it had just had a massive fish die-off. Reeked to high heaven, with rotting fish so thick on the sand you couldn't walk the shoreline, even if you'd wanted to. It was in incredibly bad shape then, too.

This isn't the first time the level has fallen drastically. Pam grew up in southern CA and remembers some friends of her parents who had a cabin on that lake that nobody would buy because the lake was so low. I think that was in the late 50's.
