Big Greg
Don't be concerned about I10, you will not be on it very long headed north to Memphis from Gulf Shores. I suggest you avoid secondary streets (and 98) in Mobile due to the live oak trees low branches. Check out 45 from Mobile to Tupelo then I78 into Memphis. FL-JOE
If you do US-45 north to I-55 just watch for speed cameras on US-45. Smaller towns down in that area don't have money for full time officers and some put up cameras and drastic speed reduction zones. They like to mail out speeding tickets. We travel I-10 a lot at least twice a year and I would much rather use that interstate than I-75 and some others. US-45 is a decent road as are most of the US highways we have been on in that area. Tupelo has the Elvis Boyhood Home Museum and the Corinth and Shiloh Battlefield Civil War sites are not that far. Another route would be through Hattiesburg to Natchez (which has a lot of historical sites) where you can explore the southern portion of the Natchez Trace, visit Vicksburg and the Battlefield and other communities along the Mississippi River. The BB King Museum is located in Indianola. Depending on the flood stage of the river, there a some nice campgrounds where you can see the barge traffic going by. Tunica has a number of Casinos and a couple that have RV Parks.
