Highway 95 Reno to Las Vegas.NV

I usually figure out my own route but the maps show nothing, which is not a good sign.  Due to the mess on I-5 which will not be fixed for a while, I am figuring out a new route south to Mesa,  This will include Rt 95 from Reno to Las Vegas.  Lots of nothing with more to come.  Has anyone been over this and where are the stopping areas?  If this is on the wrong area of the forum please point me to the correct part.

Thanks for your help

Thanks Twotoes.  I have a 38 foot rig with a toad.  How would that fit on that road?  It looks better than 95.  Any places you would recommend for O/N?

I take 95 at least once (usually twice) per year, to and from Reno - LV.  Fine road, lots of overnight towns to stop in depending on how long you drive each day.  My stops have included Fallon, Hawthorne, Beatty but sometimes I jump over to Pahrump....or have gone down 395 to Carson City, then Hwy. 50 to Alt. 95 (thru Yerington) and catch 95 at Schurz.  Try to find new routes depending on if the weather is chasing me.  There's a newer RV park in Tonopah that doesn't look too bad, but I'm usually not ready to stop there.   Fuel is no problem - I keep on the top half.

I don't stay in Vegas but skirt around and then take 95 south thru Searchlight.  I stay in Cal-Nev-Ari then head for Kingman on 163 towards Laughlin but turning left when you come down the hill onto Hwy 68.  Much less traffic than 93.  But I do head east from Kingman on 40, then catch 93/60 south into Wickenburg.

My truck and trailer are 60' and I have no problem.

Would there be any problem with snow the end of October?

The times I've gone down that way my goal has been Wickenburg the first of November.  I take my time and have always been out of the Reno area by about the 20th of October - haven't had problems but that's not to say an early storm won't develop.  I've had it snow in Tonopah (6200') but it wasn't sticking to the road.  Biggest problem with storms has been in March/April with high winds and serious snow in the Sierras and Siskiyou's but as long as you aren't in a rush, sitting still for a day or two (or a week!)  makes it passable.

We take US-95 at least once a year going south or coming back north.  It's a good road (semis travel it regularly), as are  most of the paved roads in Nevada.

We mostly boondock or dry camp and the places we've stayed along US-95 south of Reno are Churchill County Fairgrounds in Fallon (they do have electric and water hookups plus dry camping), 20-Mile Beach along Walker Lake, El Capitan Casino in Hawthorne, Millers Rest Area west of Tonopah, and an RV park in Beatty...not all in the same trip, of course.  We spend some time at a free camping area in Lake Mead NRA for awhile before heading south into AZ, usually on US-95, but sometimes on US-93.

Snow should not be a problem.  When we've taken US-95 south in the fall at the end of October/first of November, we've never run into snow anywhere along the route.

US 95 is an excellent road. Like Linda, we use it occasionally. Also haver used Churchill County Fairgrounds at Fallon and Walker Lake. As far as snow you should be OK, but several years ago while attending the Reno Air Races we were going to leave Monday, but the white stuff started to come down, so we just re-upped at the RV park for another. night. The following day, Tuesday, was beautiful. By the way, the air races are this weekend. We have a dually crew cab with a 40' fiver and you won't have a problem with that road.

Good road. Buy fuel on the north side of Fallon, on 117. That is the bypass. Expect gusty winds around walker lake. Just take it easy. As you enter Tonopah, on the left there is a RV Park. Good place to stop. Large pull through sites. The cops are always busy in tonopah. If someone appears broken down along the road, don’t stop. There are a lot of nefarious characters along this road. The only reason we didn’t get stung is because there were 6 of us in 3 vehicles and all open carrying. His story didn’t add up so we left and called the sheriff. If we had been alone it might not have ended so well. Continue on to Las Vegas. Where are you going in Mesa?

Thanks to all of you for the information.  You are a great bunch.

I plan to hit Mesa Regal on the first of November and stay until the first of April.  My Dear Bride and her garden like to stay together as much as possible.  Right now we are in Southern Oregon fighting the smoke and there are 8 fires within a hundred miles of us.  We usually take I-5 south but not this year.

Also, if you want to fuel up in Tonopah, the gas station with the best prices has always been the one *in* town on the east side of US-95, Giggle Springs/Gasoline Alley.
