This is 2018. Who DOESN'T have unlimited data these days?

Ask the Santa Clara county Fire Department how their Verizon unlimited plan is working for them.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

I don't give the slightest fraction of a damn how it is working for anybody but me. Moi. Ich. Mi. Jas. Yo. I am just shocked that with data so affordable people don't have it. That is like going to a football game and leaving at halftime. But I also don't squeeze nickels until the buffalo bleeds either. Being a nerd overrides me also being cheap. I just don't see how wanting as much data as I can use is being "sheltered". I want my data and chunks of yours if I could figure out a way to steal it.

Every current "unlimited" plan I know of now limits 4G usage of hotspot data.  T-Mobile just got rid of the last plan, International One Plus, that had unlimited hotspotting at full speed.  If you have a plan that has unlimited 4G hotspotting, even with "network optimization", don't let it go.

Bill,

I bit the bullet today and went unlimited on my phone only. Verizon. We were sharing 3GB and rarely used over 512MB, because we use our home unlimited. We were paying about $84 for two post pay phones. But they had mix and match plans where we got both A 3GB line, and an unlimited data line for just $20 more. We had to quit our post paid plan, and go prepaid and got an additional $10 bucks a month off with a $20 promo additional discount for this first month.  I want to just watch some videos in waiting rooms and stream my Amazon music now. And we will be doing some RV touring to pick what town we want to move to. Remember this only for some and part time. We can watch that screen or cast it to our TV with chromecast. But our 5.5" phones are good for us to watch directly too.

Anyway, for just two that mix and match prepaid plan floats my boat. After we settle on a place with unlimited hi speed fiber, cable, or municipal, we'll likely drop the unlimited phone plan as next year 5G will be here.

"cast it to our TV with chromecast

This will use your limited hotspot data.  You have "unlimited" on the phone, but chromecast uses a wifi hotspot to bring the video down and that is limited to 20GB/month or less depending on your plan.  If you have Miracast or other peer-to-peer casting available, that works wiithout wifi, but chromecast does not directly cast from your phone to the TV, it uses the internet.  Also realize that Verizon normally limits the video size to 720p or less, even on the phone.

Bill good point. I have not tried to cast from my mobile devices to any TV. I use Fire TVs on all our TVs and my Quad HD computer which all have an HDMI in. I'll need to do some more research and find a solution. We aren't looking for the same TV watching for entertainment. We have about 100 various newer sealed BluRay s and DVDs we have never watched and more in a 200 disk album storage book. So we can catch up on those while taking short month to two month trips. However once we find the house we may or may not sell the Scamp in favor of restoring an old VW Westphalia pop up VW bus. Or even a gently used newer one. So the TV and casting technique is yet to be determined. It looks like our Vizios all have built in Googlecast. https://www.vizio.com/smartcast-how-to-cast

However I have a couple of options I just realized. one is this, and is within my and your expertise Bill: https://www.element14.com/community/groups/moto-mods/blog/2017/02/26/screen-mirroring-a-moto-z-to-hdmi-with-the-moto-mod-development-kit-mdk

However, until now, I forgot my Moto Mods! I have the projector which works great! https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Moto+Mod+Projector+Playong&&view=detail&mid=D04D0B9CD158E66509A0D04D0B9CD158E66509A0&&FORM=VRDGAR

This is a user review: https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Moto+Mod+Projector+Playong&&view=detail&mid=5336D43AC6ED4EF36C675336D43AC6ED4EF36C67&rvsmid=D04D0B9CD158E66509A0D04D0B9CD158E66509A0&FORM=VDQVAP

So problem solved. My Moto Mod projector has its own battery so it runs longer and also uses the phone's battery. A fascinating feature is no matter where you play it, it compensates for any angle and shows the screen as if it was perfectly level. I have watched it in daylight and it is acceptable and with low light it is amazing!

Glad there was no acceptable Moto Z to TV  connection answer. I have not used the projector beyond a half hour test when I bought it. I have the JBL speaker mod https://www.amazon.com/JBL-SoundBoost-Moto-Speaker-Black/dp/B01K380ODQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1535052150&sr=8-3&keywords=mods+for+moto+z&dpID=41YqxK2XNjL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch  but both, as well as my Moto Z Tumi wireless charging battery attachment: https://www.amazon.com/TUMI-Wireless-Charging-Power-Pack/dp/B01LRZ8MDI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1535052093&sr=8-1&keywords=Tumi+battery+mods+moto+z

I also have three of these 12000 mAh car starter/power banks:

Suaoki T10 12V 400A 12000mAh Peak Portable Jump Starter

They also have USB charging/run ports. I also have another 12000mAh  Power bank for devices only. As well we have one of our two Bose Soundlink mini II speakers in the Scamp for the TV and it can also be connected to the Phone via Bluetooth for audio while the projector is running. We rarely park without hookups but could go a long while with the Tumi battery mod, the car starter chargers, and the Power bank.

Man! I did not consider the starter chargers we have in each of our vehicles, or the Moto Mods we have. I'll just grab all three to take with, in addition to the power bank for electronics not cars and the Tumi phone mod.. We have plenty of room for them all.

BTW folks, Best Buy has dropped the Moto Z display, as they aren't popular. So folks who have Moto mods sell them cheap.  I bought the Projector and JBL speaker mods, used, for $25 each! They are like new. I would anticipate them going even cheaper. The original Moto Z Play we have is three generations behind, they have since gone to the Play 2 and Play 3. None have the large Battery the original Moto Z Play has. They go 2.5 to 3 days on  a single charge! Still after two years! So if one wanted a dedicated rechargeable projector, JBL sound system, battery mod and even the fancy cameras and other mods, they should be available for pennies on the dollar with a bit of patience used, or like now very cheap new on clearance as here: https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=moto+mods+soundboost&tag=mh0b-20&index=aps&hvadid=78408976964577&hvqmt=b&hvbmt=bb&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_57j36wtt0c_b

I love it when a plan comes together!

For the Chromecast conversation as it applies to cellphone, hotspots and jetpacks, consider this. Have you ever thought about plugging your computer into the TV and streaming from that computer? My living room TV (I am not in my RV yet) has a desktop connected to it. That desktop has 450 movies and a bunch of concerts, stand up comedy and TV series I like on 2 large hard drives. In addition, when there IS something I want to stream, I just change the TV input to the TV and stream the show on that TV rather than onto a phone or a laptop and using the Chromecast. Just another option. As cheap as computers are now.....

Most CASTING devices use very little if not zero data when casting content that is stored on the device......it is only when you are streaming content over the internet to the device and then casting to the TV that your data usage increases.

Yeah my RV will be wired in such a way that I will have a wired LAN as well as a wireless LAN that connects to the WAN so when I want to do something as minor as file sharing I can just change the connection on the computers to the D-Link router and move my files. Then connect them back to the Pepwave by wireless NIC, which will be the WAN box that gets me out of the RV, either my cellular modem or the wifi repeater. The stuff I have stored on the media computer will not need a casting device as it is connected to the #3 HDMI input on the TV. With the video card I have in that computer the picture is beautiful!

I actually made a video one to prove a point to someone who claimed to cast video I had to be on the internet. He also said I didn't know the difference between my LAN and WAN. An MCSE doesn't know the difference between LAN and WAN? Really? So, JUST for him, I did a video showing me streaming via Chromecast with my cable modem powered off. (Though he likely didn't even believe me THEN, so...) I can't tell you how pissed I was that someone was telling me I could not do something I had done many times before.....

Guys, guys, guys,

The Chromecast details might help another, but not in my area of interest right now. My new Vizio TV comes with chromecast built in:

Excerpt:

"In addition, the display uses VIZIO's SmartCast OS with integrated access to popular apps like Netflix, Prime Video, Vudu, iHeartRadio, Crackle and Xumo directly through the TV screen using the included remote. Meanwhile, customers can also download the free SmartCast Mobile app to use their smartphone as a touchscreen remote, and Google Chromecast built-in allows users to cast thousands of Chromecast-enabled apps to the display from their supported mobile device. Finally, voice-control support for Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant is offered as well."

I am getting my Vizio Quantum 65" delivered tomorrow as it was too big for my Ram diesel  back seat.

I do have unlimited 200Mbps cable Internet here at home. The unlimited Verizon plan we just bought will likely never be used for more than a few GB a month until we go house hunting With the Scamp.

Apparently none of my links above were read.

I am seriously going to use a very portable fold out screen that is perfect for us to watch in our tiny fiver. This got delivered yesterday: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B079M5GMCL/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's great! folds up to nothing, and makes the projected image as good as any TV.

The moto mod projector mounts on the back of my phone with very powerful magnets. In use, the projector is the stand under the phone, my phone with the phone screen facing up so I can control it:

Remember we had two 36 foot fivers for full timing for the seven years we full timed. We can afford whatever RV we want, the tiny Scamp is our choice just for fun and is minimalist, that's just us.
