RandyA
Funny thing, Urea is actually the basis for many fertilizers - 46-0-0 Nitrogen is the main one. Guess your stranger dude somehow connected the diesel fuel/nitrogen fertilizer formula with DEF. Humm...... come to think of it, you have diesel fuel in your truck and are adding nitrogen in the form of urea 😀. What's amusing is that DEF works because of the fact that it really is rather similar in chemistry to the fertilizer bombs previously mentioned. Urea becomes ammonia (NH3) in the heat of the exhaust system. Ammonia contains the same triple-bonded nitrogen that makes fertilizer a good explosive. Breaking the bond releases energy. In fertilizer bomb, the energy of the nitrogen bond rapidly combusts the fuel oil creating an explosion. In the case of DEF, the energy in the ammonia breaks up nitrogen oxides in the exhaust and converts them into nitrogen and water. The chemistry is similar, but the result is very different. noteven
Many moons ago a local grain farmer set out to break a large stone that frost had finally pushed to surface to interfere with tillage. A hole was bored angled under the stone. A quantity of ammonium nitrate 34-0-0 was saturated with farm dyed diesel fuel. More is always better. A fuse was lit. Father and son drove awaaaay over dere a 1/4 mile or more to safety. A rock shattering kaBOOM went off. I don’t know how high in the air a piece of glacier deposited stone the size of a basketball has to go to take 5 or 6 seconds to land smack in the middle of the hood of your 3 week old F150 1/4 mile away... but it did. No one hurt. "Are we there yet?" asked no motorcycle rider, ever.
