Where are you spending this summer?

Kirk W

Recommended Posts

Later today we will be moving into our summer home at Cross Ranch State Park in North Dakota. While there we will be volunteers both in the park and at the nearby Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Should anyone on the forum happen to pass this way, please do stop in and say howdy! We would love to see you.

I thought that it might be nice and also interesting if others would share with us all what your summer plans are this year? The more the better so don't hesitate to jump in. It will help us to connect when or if we should cross paths in our summer travels.

Good travelin !...............Kirk

We just landed in central Illinois and will stay here until sometime in August visiting kids, grandkids, and friends.  Will then make a run over to western Ohio and up through Michigan, before winding back down to central Illinois.  In September we head to the Virginias, Carolinas, then back to the Smokies.  November we will split our time between the Florida panhandle and Alabama, before heading back to SW Florida for December through March.

Hope everyone has a safe summer.

Oh we spent a month in Southern Oregon, now we are in Central Oregon for a couple weeks before heading to the Oregon coast. We will work our way along the coast north through Washington. Then we will cut over to Idaho and wander around a bit before dropping back into Oregon. Nevada, Utah and on south to Arizona for the winter.

Not a bunch of travel this summer like we did last summer.

Left Yuma May 1, then a month in Vegas area, now in Twin Falls, ID. and next week on up to Island Park, ID. area and Yellowstone N P. Sometime in July over to Western Montana, Kalispell, Glacier N P, Libby, and Swan Lake area. Have spent the last month in Eastern Washington, next week head for Idaho/Montana, then angle up thru Alberta on the east side of Calgary with stops along the way.  Will be in Athabasca, Alberta for a week or 2 in July visiting various locations of my ancestors from the early 1900's.  After that.....I have no idea.

We left Yuma and made a few stops along the way to Caballo Lake NM.  Decided to stay for the summer.  Cooler than Arizona by a few degrees and still cools off at night.  So far even when over 100 during the day we do not have to run the air 24/7.

We have an annual family gathering at Magnolia Springs State Park in Millen, GA every July 4..actually the weekend after. We'll leave central FL on June 29 and go to Carrabbelle FL for 5 days before going to Millen. We decided not to travel like usual and just sit and relax, so we'll go to Hiawassee GA for a couple of weeks and then to Mama Gerties near Asheville until Aug. 4. We'll probably find someplace else to stay in either GA, NC, or SC after that and come home toward the end of August.

For only the second time since 2004 we are staying in the nice warm climate of San Antonio, TX.

Instead of heading to Oregon to spend time with Son, DIL and two grandsons we are going to fly the boys here, one at a time, for a two week stay each.

It is already nice and warm, 99-101 for the last week or more.  Cooling off to the mid 90's for a few days right now.  Oh, yeah, our lows this last week or more have been all the way down to 77-78 each morning, and nice and humid.

I sure do like Mister Carrier and Mister Friedrich the inventors of air conditioning.  I don't know what we would do without them!

While both Sharon and I grew up w/o A/C as children, it sure is different now that we are in our 70's.

Don't know much about the two men you mentioned but let's not leave out John Gorrie.  Here's a link to share his contribution.

Good to know about John Gorrie.

Will Carrier and Ed Friedrich both were instrumental in mass producing air conditioning.  First for commercial use in the first quarter of the 20th century, and then mass producing air conditioning for the general population after WWII.

Both Carrier and Friedrich, I credit for the migration of the US population to the southern half of the US.  Major corporations, didn't move to the south because of the summer heat, which in Texas and a lot of the south extends from early May into October.  It would have been hard to convince management and employees to move into homes in this area w/o air conditioning priced so the common person could afford it.

After attending Escapade, we have headed north and will be attending the Great Lakes Area Tri-Rally in Coldwater, MI. From there we plan to continue meandering north and west traveling mostly 2 lane hiways finding interesting stops along the way.

We plan to make it to the Washington/Oregon area by early fall (Sept.) and then continue on south for some meetups in the California/Arizona area November thru January, of course with Quartzite in January.

If you make it to North Dakota, stop by Cross Ranch State Park and/or the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and say hello! The ranch is right on one of the few remaining unchanged stretches of the Missouri River and has camping.

For the first time since 2006 we are grounded for the summer both Helen and I  are down with minor medical issues that would make our usual summer travel  travel difficult so it is summer at the S&B. We should be back on the road by fall.
