Winching a smart car

I know some model smart cars cannot be towed four down without damaging the transmission.  My question then is if you are winching a smart onto the bed must the car remain running in neutral to prevent damage to the transmission or can the key be left on without the car running and placed in neutral?  I have been doing the later for several years but reading a towing article for smarts got me thinking.

I asked the same thing of the Service dept here as well as the Parts mngr who made my hitch.  All said it would cause no problem.  I do leave it running anyway to keep the power steering pump running.  Its easier to turn the wheels when making adjustments to alignment of the car on the ramps.

Not you too, Pat.  Joining the chorus line with the naysayers?  I’m just going to have to get my teddy bear and go to my safe space because I’ve been triggered.😩
