Permanent cooking facilities? Oregon....

Purple Tractor

Recommended Posts

I just stopped by the DMV to get the forms to license the truck as a motorhome. They told me I had to bring the truck, which I already knew, it had to have sleeping & permanent cooking facilities then told me a microwave does not count. What do I need to install?

Exhaust manifold and a roll of aluminum foil?

Seriously, I would think a hot plate fastened down might do it.  In Ohio and Indiana, a microwave qualifies.  Law says a range or oven.

Purple,

We registered our old Freightshaker at the DMV in Bend .......it took 15 minutes to have our number called and 5 minutes ($7.00) for a vin inspection and less than 30 seconds to peek at our "Motorhome-kitchen-porta-poti-Fridge-Inverter-LittleBuddy Heater-self-contained-sink-grey water system and only......$287.00 later bingo we have a Motorhome registered in Oregon........

Below is the link to the tiny cook-center that looks like a toy but it cooks very nicely........we use it more than we ever imagined.

Dolly,

That thing reminds me of the old late night commercial for Ronco.    It slices, dices and Julian's, turn it over and it is a 5 speed drill press.

I would look around at some of the camper van conversion sites to get some ideas. I really like some of the hob and sink combos that come out of the UK. They come in all shapes and sized. Multiple burners...

Ie., The Cans or a Smev. They come in all different configurations and even in full kits ready to install... including a pump.

With ODMV it's kind of hit and miss. I hear of a guy that got away with bolting a hibachi to a small cabinet. Of course, he was told no by 3 DMV employees before finally speaking to a supervisor that was unable to define how his hibachi didn't constitute a "permanent" cooking facility. I think he eventually just wore them down.

That being said... "facility" is generally more than just some method of heating food items. They are looking for a dedicated food preparation area. Typically to have some type of "sink" of some sort along with your "cooking device". A water jug with a waste/drain jug and a manual pump faucet would suffice.

I don't know how strict they are these days, but I have also heard of folks where the DMV employee simply took their word for it without even inspecting their rig. Leaving it up to the owner to explain/satisfy an LEO that they were in compliance if the situation ever arose.

As Dolley said... ODMV is as accomodating as they can be to HDT/RV'ers, but as far as I have ever heard there is no black and white about exactly what does or does not consitute a "permanent cooking facility".

LOL, as a retired farmer I've cooked many meals on an exhaust manifold.

Maybe I'll go in close to closing time, they may not want to spend much time inspecting it then.

You guys are lucky. In Minnesota you need to have " (1) a cooking facility with liquid propane gas supply" to meet the requirements, BUT the way the law is written you aren't required to have a cooking facility.

I had the best luck at the DMV right when they open.  Catch them before they've had their coffee.

We got lucky when we registered ours in MN. The truck had previously been registered as a motorhome in Texas and the DMV in MN simply honored that and did not reinspect to see if everything required by MN was there (previous owner had removed some items but I was prepared to put the required items back in). When we registered it in SC, they did the same thing but when we got the new title in the mail they actually incorrectly showed the new title as truck. When I stopped back and asked them about it, they said sorry about that and printed a new title right there at the DMV which showed RV now on it.

I don't know if Minnesota actually inspects the truck for what is required. I asked at one DMV and they said I needed to fill out an affidavit and provide receipts for what I spent to convert it. Hopefully it won't be terrible whenever I can try to change a title..........

In TX you need the affidavit and show who converted it. You don't need the receipts or anything like that, though.
