Fluids for power steering

Recommended Posts

Hi

i repaired my return hose to the power steering reservoir but lost a lot of fluid in the process.

Need to replenish but don’t know it’s capacity or what was in there! It was reddish clear fluid. I cannot find a manual showing recommended fluids or capacities yet. It may be atf fluid my CD with fluids info in missing...

I do not want to depart until I can get a reading on the dip stick.

Can you suggest what type of power steering fluid I can buy and how big the reservoir probably is?

Power Steering Reservoir
The power steering fluid reservoir is filled with Automatic
Transmission Fluid (ATF) Dexron
steering system. Change fluid every 240,000 km
(150,000 miles). Change filter every year or more often
if necessary.
If the fluid has darkened, it indicates the power steering
system is running hotter than normal and the fluid is
overheating. Troubleshoot for possible overheating and
change the fluid.
The Power Steering Reservoir fluid is maintenance free
and should only be changed in the event of required
maintenance as a result of mechanical failure.

Good to check the manual on such things.

And just to be difficult lots of Freightliners use the same motor oil that is used in the engine, a decal is on the reservoir but sometimes cannot be read. Have no idea what Paccar or International do. When in doubt, read the instructions...

Steve,

According to the Volvo service guide, you should use trans fluid.  Same as my 2013 VNL730.

Power Steering Reservoir: The power steering fluid reservoir is filled with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Dexron® III for the power steering system.

Sheppard 92's were the ones that only take engine oil.  They've all been OK'd with engine oil actually but you lose some on the max temp (don't dry steer it and don't hold at poppets - but a guy should drive truck like that anyways) and you have to change oil every 50K.  So ATF is probably the better choice if you have a TAS or Sheppard M.
