So whats the real cost here? I have heard all sorts of numbers thrown around....

I am a little bit more of a budget-friendly sort of HDTer so I am not above finding a rear end on Craigslist or the likes and swapping it in but how the heck do I know which ones will fit??

I am not 100% sure what my current gears are but with my series 60 detroit, in 10th, I am doing about 1750rpm at 65mph. I never go over 65 anyway but I feel like that is a tad high rpm wise.

Thanks!

I found some new old stock parts on Ebay and was able to do the overhaul w/ gear swap on my single screw Eaton for about $500. I would expect $2000 + or - if you had a shop do the job with new parts.

If you give us the trans model and tire size, it would be pretty easy to figure out the ratio.

Boneyard diffs run 350-600 with a 125-200 core  generally no rhyme or reason.    If there is none close by figure 150 shipping, well under 750 if you by on-line to your door.    If you are singling the rear it is not much more to swap out the diff.

Swapping a diff in a big rearend is just like a smaller truck just heavier.

My truck says it's 3.58 rear end on the door and currently has low pro 22.5's. I run about 1500rpm's at 67mph in 10th,  about 72mph at 1600rpm's, also with a detroit.

I will double check when I get back to the truck but I do not remember seeing it on the door sticker.

There is a tag on the diff that, in amongst other numbers, says 4.10xxx but I recently chatted with someone that has the same 9spd direct, 295 22.5's, and 3.36's that runs 1700ish at 65. I know there are variables but 3.36 is a looonnnnggggg way from 4.10.

I just know that I would love to be around 8mpg (at least) but I think 1750 cruising and a 375 hp series 60 is probly not the best combo for that. Lol

And for whoever was asking, its a 11.1 S60 with a Spicer 9 spd and 295/75/22.5 rubber

I had a 3.58 rear end.  Put in a freshly rebuilt 3.07 locker at Vaander Haags in Sioux Falls.  It was around $2,500 out the door I think (red wine and age makes the memory a little blurry hahah).

I have nearly new nice 24.5 tires on aluminum wheels on the truck that I'd be open to trading for similar 22.5s if anyone is looking to get bigger rubber but doesn't want to spend $$

So IF you have an overdrive 9spd with a OD of .73 and a 4.10 differential ratio......You would be right at your current 1650@65mph. Now the trick is where is the torque peak/efficient cruise rpm for the 11.1 S60? What cruise speed do you want to gear for?

With just a 9 spd, those gears are only going to get closer together with a taller differential ratio.

Example: 3.55 ratio is 1650 in 8th @ 55 mph and 1425 in 9th at 65mph

How much high speed while unloaded? What is your target towing speed? What about a 3.21 ratio..... for 1490 in 8th @ 55mph, but just 1385 in 9th @ 70mph? This way you run direct while loaded and OD only while loaded.

Guyz ,

Crawl under the truck a copy down the model number of your tranny.....then look up ALL ratios of ALL the gearz......

Example:.   Our old shaker did dual-duty as a heavy-sometimes-grain-hauler with a 105,500 permit.....so first FIVE gearz just gets yo across the intersection.... gears 6 &7& 8 are nice to blow by $uper-pickups on the Davis-grade and 9 is a fairly nice spot in the 50 to 60 range and 10 is warp-$peed......we have 3:08'$ and s hellish high-reverse gear that I do NOT like......reverse is a pain in the @$$......

Maybe I need to install a four-$peed brownie then I would have......hummmm only 36 gears forward and 8 speeds in reverse......

Drive on.......(paint blisters in.....reverse)

Love my 12 speed ishift, now with 4 (!) reverse gears!  Anywhere from creepy crawley to warp drive.

(Non overdrive and 2.47 rear end, still wishing it had a locker $$)

I do notice quite the difference in the reverse gear between my 3.90's and the 3.36's and it's not in the good direction. Can't imagine having 3.08's or taller!
