Mr. Heater in MH

Recommended Posts

We have our Mr. Heater(Model MH18) connected in the MH directly from the MH tank, after the propane tank regulator. We have the special hose from Mr. Heater that they recommend to use with regulated MH pressure(we assume it is a passthru.

We do not have a filter installed on the hose. It is a quick connect to the line from the propane tank.

We are puzzled with what happened this morning. We were at 7000' for our second day with no problems. This morning(2nd day) Mr Heater worked fine. Out of the clear blue it turned off and would not relight. We assume Mr. Heater stopped working due to altitude  but why did it work yesterday with no problems.

We are now down to 6500' and Mr. Heater is working fine................

Thanks

Its listed max elevation is 7,000 ft.  Changes in barometric pressure could vary your virtual altitude above that.

Also it has an Automatic low oxygen shut-off system (ODS). Assume you keep a window cracked open while in use.

We have had catalytic heaters for 30 years and take all precautions. I know it is listed at 7000 ft but don't understand why it would work for a day and then decide there isn't enough oxygen. I guess pressure could be the cause but it worked for 2 hours this AM and then stopped.

We are now down to 6500' so all is well and we will change our habits when around 7000' and above.

I purchased one at a swapmeet in Bishop California it is the single canister one with hi and low and it worked good just a small test time at 7165 feet of the Sierras. not a good test but am following the topic.

Brick, blue flame and ceramic LP heaters do not like altitudes above 6000 feet.  We had an Empire brick heater that behaved the same way at 7000 feet, due to the oxygen sensor.  Catalytic heaters can run well up to 10000 to 12000 feet, since they do not have the oxygen sensor since there is no flame.

Looks like Enerco has improved the Mr. Heater lineup. A few years ago the little buddy model was the only model approved for use in an RV  All models state 7,000' is maximum elevation.

After emailing back and forth with Mr. Heater the conclusion was we needed more air and open the window further. We are no longer at 7000' to try this but will keep it in mind. Never did explain why it worked for on day and not the next. Time to move on and live with the mystery.
