Overnight parking at Costco?

In the latest issue (mar 2017, V12, #3) of "The Costco Connection" there is an article about Costco members and their unique dwellings. Plus on the cover is a picture of the Curren Family (5 people) with there 2008 27FT Airstream Travel trailer.

http://www.costcoconnection.com/connection/201703?pg=1#pg1 rest of article on page 31.

The reason for this post is to see if:

1.) does or do Costco's allow ONP at club locations, and

2.) if not how can we, Costco members in RV's, send a message to Costco that this would be a great benefit for traveling public that happen to travel in RV's.

I know this is a long shot but I think a small effort can be a big event if we get folks that when at a local costco seek out the manager and ask them about costco policy and how it woiuld nice to have that ability when traveling either full time or when on vacation with RV going from place being able to shop and stay for a night if needed..

lets see how this goes.

Many ONP issues are local government controlled.  Merchants, in some cases have little to say about it.

A resource you might find useful is:  https://overnightrvparking.com/

This site is an extensive list of low or no cost places to spend the night.  there is a small fee to join but I find it VERY useful.  Plus, they extend your membership when you report a new site of confirm an existing site.  Tell them I referred you and I even get an extension!

I don't know about Costco, but WalMart and Sam's Club allow overnight parking. But a lot of cities do not allow it! So basically it's not Costco, Sam's Club WalMart. It's the city municipal codes.

It's the same thing as requiring permits before you can put a house or business on your private land.

If you're going to run an overnight campground, you should have to follow the same health and safety codes as any other campground.  Maybe not 50 amp full hookups at every site, but at least access to the basics like potable water and a dump station.

Or so claims the guy trying to run a competing campground in that town.

w6pea, there is a Sam's club near me now that doesn't allow parking overnight in front and it is on the south end of of a shopping center that has a Walmart on the north end that allows it. It is a real busy Walmart and I wouldn't stay there unless I absolutely had to just out of courtesy. I have stayed 1 night twice behind the Sam's club with no issues.  Sort of strange that one does and one doesn't and they are that close together. I have seen some stay for a few hours in front  of Sam's in the daytime only.

An overnight sleep in a fully self-contained rig that leaves no footprint is far from a campground experience. We have no need for dump-stations or 50 amp,  Most local ordinances prohibiting RONs are the result of lobbying by campground owners associations.  They are using the law to force us to do business with them.

He wants to force people to use his business. Perhaps the grocery stores should join forces to stop residents from growing uninspected vegetables in the dirt of their back yards?

I can almost bet that many vegetables in stores are not inspected properly, Listeria, Salmonella, etc.

Back to the topic! back in my old home town the campground owners went to a town hall meeting and the city leaders sided with them! No more overnight RVing at businesses!

I have always wondered how a municipality can have a code regulating he use of private land like Same or Walmart.

I have come to understand that many of them are leasing the land and building from the city, so city ordinances prevail. I read that though, so it did not come firsthand from the business. And we all know how reliable the internet is, right?

If the greedy CG owners would charge maybe $10 a night for no hookups etc, I'd use them just for the security

I use Passport America which gets me about half of my nights for $15-20 when traveling. For me it's well worth the security and FHU.

Most of that type restrictions are done via zoning laws or by city codes. Most cities do restrict what you can build on or do with property that you hold the deed to when it is located inside of the city limits. In some states, there is zoning by county or even state wide.

Pieere, can you tell us the name of the town which sided with the campground owners?

I personally do not see this as important. A quick Google search will show multiple places where this has occurred. At one point the State of Maine was being lobbied by campgrounds to ban overnight parking lot stays. I do not know if this passed or not. In another case area campgrounds lobbied to prevent a casino from allowing overnight parking for RVs.

It is safe to assume that this has happened in many other places. The real key is to call ahead and verify whether you can or can not stay. It really does not matter whether it is state or local ordinance or the business itself that has decided that you can or can not nor does it matter if it was campgrounds that lobbied for the bans. There are cases, too many to mention, where businesses of all stripes have lobbied for protectionist laws in favor of their own businesses.

FHU = Full Hookups.

Full Hookups include water, sewer and electric right at your campsite. No need to drive to the dump or fresh water fill site.

Thanks for the quick and courteous info, BlueLgtning and sandsys.

To many fora on the internet are populated by jerks who will denigrate you for asking what they perceive to be a stupid question.  Great to be on a forum with nice folks!
