So share with us what value the group has for those of us who served but are excluded from use of the military campgrounds? My VA identity card won't get me access to any of them since I only put in 8 years. I did look at the website but since the Escapade is enough rally for us each year, I just don't see much to justify my joining.

If you'll pardon me, I'll not retype everything on the S.M.A.R.T. website that explains, please visit the website (link above) and it will answer most every question you may have about the organization.

We do not park at military CG's because most of our members are not retired military, though it was initially formed for/by retired military. There are however some military CG's where the post/base commander(their prerogative) opened the CG to the public.  S.M.A.R.T. organization is not connected in any way with the military or DOD.

You can easily  pay over 100.00 a nigh for a campsite at Ft Wilderness at Disney world and it will be the best lodging deal in the park.

ONLY $100? You goy away cheap  ;)

I was lucky in that my Travel Scoot only had room for 2 cloth bags of groceries. So, I could stop at Walmarts several nights in a row before I bought everything on my grocery list. :)

Lived in San Diego CA many years. Lots of campgrounds between $75 to $100 near the beach. If you go inland into the mountains they are still in the $50 to $60 range. Even the Indian Casino RV parks are $50 a night.

There's a campground in Newport Beach, CA that is over $100 a night. We've never stayed there but my daughter goes there once a year. They will deliver "room service" to you by golf cart. It's right on the bay, I think.

I have stayed there twice. They have nice amenities and you are paying for location. On the bay and right in Newport Beach. Same thing with SF RV resort, paying to be close to the city.

Florida keys for us over new years weekend.  Paid $100+ for the worst campground we have ever stayed in (Kings Kamp).  NEVER again!

We go to the Keys for December every year.  Yep, campsites are almost ALL over $100 unless you are staying the month.  The state parks are nice and a bargain at $28 per night, BUT you need to be on the website at 11 months months out (the farthest they allow reservations) in order to get popular dates.  I've never heard of Kings Kamp in all the years we stayed down there, but the thing you have to watch out for is there are a bunch of "campgrounds" where the same dilapidated campers have been on blocks since the 70's and are basically trailer parks but being a "campground" bypasses a bunch of rules.  Nothing against trailer parks, it's just not where I want to go on vacation.  Our favorite: The Fish Camp at Geiger Key.  Sites right on the water, off the beaten path but only 10 minutes from Key West.  And the onsite restaurant has the best hogfish sandwich in the lower keys.  We were able to stop in and negotiate $500 cash for the first week of December as they had a few open sites.

No, the site is free as long as you are getting work done.

That may be one of the reasons why we've never wallydocked. Going in those doors is expensive!

Even though we never boondock, neither do we stay at fancy RV resorts.  It's just not our style  We stayed at Yellowstone Grizzly last summer and thought that ~$70/night was pretty steep.  We're going to stay at a nice family CG on Prince Edward Island this summer and will pay <$30/night on a monthly basis.  That's more our style.

I don't understand the problem. This RV Park is just minutes away from downtown NYC. Hotel rooms run what, $200 for a really cheap room to maybe $500 for a good, but not top of the line hotel?? They you have to pay another $75-$100 a day, per person, for meals.

There are less expensive RV Parks, probably in the $50-$60 a day range, with a commute of 1.5 to 2 hours each way to the heart of NYC.

On the other hand if your reason for staying at Liberty Harbor is NOT to visit NYC the I know of no reason to want to stay there.

I know of another RV Park along the line of Liberty Harbor. It is in New Orleans, about 5 blocks from the French Quarter. Their campsites are in the $175 to $200 or more if you want to stay there during Marti Gras. However if you want to stay during Marti Gras, you need to make reservations a year or two in advance.

Problem is not being rich and being able to afford $110 a day NOW to park. Even their dirt parking lot for boondocking is $75 a day...just to park. Pretty soon it will be $150 a day to park with hook ups and $100 a day for the dirt lot.

...you don't think that is disgusting??

Not totally sure how to respond.

In the examples given the issue and cost is "Location, Location, Location".

If I wanted to buy a house or condo in a rich fancy neighborhood and had the money to do so then I would expect the price of the house go along with the neighborhood.

If I was unable to afford a big expensive house I would look for a house I could afford.  It would be an older house in an older neighborhood, as well as a smaller house.

BTW this is what we did all of our life.  We could have stretched our budget and bought more house, as well as sold that house after some years and moved up.  However doing that would have significantly reduced our life time savings.  Or with a housing downturn, left us with a house we couldn't sell for what we owed.

Same with the RV's we have owned.  Always bought RV's which are older 8-12 years old.  Had to do some work to make them our home, but much less expensive than buying new.

But back to the issue of paying $100 or more for one night in an RV Park.

Other than really wanting to be in a location such as just a few minutes from NYC and Manhattan Island I know of no reason why I personally would spend $100 a night to stay in an RV Park.  There are very popular tourist spots with fancy RV Parks that command $100/night.  Florida and California come to mind.  I can't think of a reason I would pay that much.  There are other much lower priced options available.

Even in New Orleans, there are much cheaper options that let you pretty easily visit the sights without staying withing a few blocks of the French Quarter.  There are even very nice State Parks about within 15 miles of the French Quarter.

It is everyone's option to decide what is best for them.  It is called freedom of choice.

I also consider what it costs to operate a RV Park.  For the one right near downtown NYC,I'm sure the cost of the land fees, taxes and whatever, has a major affect on the price to rent a site.

No biggie deal.  Out of your price range, just don't go.  But "disgusting" I don't find it so.
