National HDT Rally

Talked with the transplant specialist today. Looks like we won't be able to make the rally. I will be in the midst of no immune system and being sick at that time. It will only last 1-3 weeks. This will get me up to 10 years in remission. It looks like we will have to make the west coast rally this year. We will miss getting together with y'all.

Howdy Ron,

Wishing you all the best in your health situation, hope to see you at the next WCR.

Thanks Dave. Now I need to find the date and location of the next west coast rally

I don't mean to hijack the National Rally thread, but we are looking at June 15-19 (Fathers day weekend) for the WCR. It will be in Caldwell, ID. After the first of the year when the parks reservation system will allow the sites to be blocked off, we will announce it officially.

I see Scott (MrSeas) is also up late and posted at the same time as me.

Hello, new member here. I joined because I'm interested in the rally. I'm watching the local ads (North Carolina) for a Volvo. I think the rally will help me narrow down my preferences.

My old GMC pickup is not likely to make the journey, so I am thinking about renting an RV or a pickup to pull our 26' camper. Hotels are of course an option also.

Advice? Thanks.

For the cost of a rental you could stay at a hotel. You won't miss much. You will be there for the seminars, the meals and the happy hour. You will be able to walk around and stick your nose under any hood that is open. Your DW will have her own sessions and shopping and eating. It has been set up so you don't have to stay at the fairgrounds. You will leave with a host of new friends and a wealth of knowledge.

Sculptor, we look forward to seeing you at the HDT Rally. However you wind up getting there, and wherever you stay, it will be a great experience. We already have several registered that will be staying in hotels. We also have some that will be staying on site in a tent. A rental RV or Rental truck and your own trailer would be the most desirable, but however you come, you won't regret it. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Sculptor I spent many long hours trying to find something local to me here in Missouri to have no luck. I did however find a very clean 2013 Volvo 780 that was in Chicago. I paid a $500.00 refundable deposit for them to bring the truck down closer to me and as it turned out it was the one I ended up buying. I looked at tons of trucks and traveled many miles to find my truck and after all of that got into contact with the gentleman that helped me find my truck. I would be happy to give you his info if you think it would be of help to you. PM me if you are interested.

Look for the truck you want...nationally. I'm in south Texas, found my truck in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.

I'd stay in a hotel given your circumstances. As others have said, if you hang out on the grounds you will not miss much....and there are plenty of "roving" happy hours.

Phil (Big5er) is right on...look for your truck, first on this forum, and then nationally. Otherwise you are neglecting probably the best chance of finding what you want.

Welcome, and see you at the Rally.

Finished registration last week! This will be our first HDT Rally and will be "Gars" first Rally but he has been to others as "JoyRider" My wife Robin and I are looking forward to learning more about what we've gotten ourselves into! :-)

As we continue our process of 'setting up' our truck and our new to us rig we have a short list of must do's that includes finding someone to install our 2 voyager cameras we've never installed. Are there going to be vendors (not on the official list) or other HDT'ers that might consider making some extra money wiring them up to our 2001 660? I'm able to assist only as a helper. Having the wires routed in the cab/dash as well as getting them connected using the best method has to be left to someone with experience doing it. If the forum suggests that we NOT have it done while we're at the rally please let me know and we'll find another place to get r dun.

Thanks and we'll see you in Hutchinson!

Open the hood, and they will come! There never seems to be a shortage of help with projects that people have. There's a wealth of knowledge and experience there. We will have a Bulletin Board up in the main building where you can put up a notice that you need help with a particular project, or if you have skills that someone else may be able to use, that can be posted there too.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Thank you all for your replies. Your answers are very encouraging and I hope I get to meet all of you. Are there any threads here that talk about RV financing? I've seen a couple of things about RV titling but that seems to be state by state according to the mood of the licensing office.

I have stumbled upon this "next step" because I have an old GMC pickup. I CAN'T spend $50-60k to replace it only to watch it rust away like this one did. (we are from Michigan originally, as if that should explain it) I am much more familiar with Volvo trucks than any other truck out there, and I think an HDT would be money better spent.

Hello Sculptor,

We had a few issues getting our Volvo financed. I tried two local credit unions, 1 I belonged to and 1 I used to belong to. There was so much drama going on that it almost wasn't worth it. It seems that everything fought on just purchasing this truck. We purchased it from a dealer, there in was the biggest issue. It is titled as a semi, on a semi lot and is considered a commercial vehicle due to not being titled, sold or being used as an RV. Nobody would finance us because the truck was considered commercial as we would drive it off the lot. We then went to a major bank where we have multiple accounts. They wouldn't finance it as an auto/truck loan,

In the end, we ended up doing a loan through our business, this is where it gets tricky. We are going to see if we can get the RV plates this week, but we have to give ourselves "permission" to use the truck as a "recreational Vehicle" by writing a letter from our business to ourselves. Now we can get the title done, so we have been told by CO license Dept. We shall see how it goes on Wednesday.

Good luck with your endeavor, Shane

Shane, I am curious. Whose name will your new "RV" be in? Yours or the company's? And are you going to be pulling that dragster to the races in it?

You might want to cross check what the Colorado DMV has been telling you with the DOT since those two groups are concerned with totally different things. Colorado commercial enforcement is one of the more serious groups in the country (CA, CO, NE and parts of TX are fairly serious). A company owned "RV" still belongs to the company. Being "allowed" to use it for an employee "perk" is compensation and may still put it in the commercial regs, the same goes for pulling that race car to the races. An RV used commercially is still a commercial vehicle and is not exempt from the federal regs...ie: log book, CDL, medical card, USDOT number, etc.

Lets see if we can get this thread back on track.

If you want a T-shirt with your registration, there are only two weeks left before the deadline. If you send your REGISTRATION FORM in after that, that's OK, however you may not get a T-shirt and there is a late fee. If you plan on coming, but are unable to get your registration to me by September 15, please contact me and let me know. Gail and I will be leaving soon after that and will not receive your registration. If that is the case, you can email the registration form (or at least the information) to me and then bring cash to the rally. We have no way of dealing with checks or credit cards at the rally. It's important that we have this information so that we can properly order catering etc. Also, check the REGISTRATIONS PAGE. if you have sent in your registration and you name is not there, or if there are errors that need correcting, please let me know.

This is shaping up to be a great National HDT Rally this year. We hope to see you all there.

Mr. Big5er,

The Truck will be in our personal names, the only thing associated with the business is the loan. Yes, we will be pulling the race trailer with it. That is where a lot of the gray area comes in to play, commercial/recreation separation. I have had a couple of conversations with people on the definition of commercial vs. non-commercial. It's open to the individual LEA and what mood they are in. Some say, if you receive payment of any sort, it's commercial. Others have said it's recreational unless you are making a living at it. Talk to 3 different people and get 3 different answers. I can tell you about NE and the horror stories with their State Patrol. More than a few of my friends have been pulled over. It's even worse now with the pot profiling and CO plates. All we do here is smoke pot, so I am told.
