Dutch_12078
In NY State, the DMV office functions are typically managed by the county clerk's office with oversight by the state DMV. Registrations and licenses are handled there as well as the collection of the vehicle related state sales tax when required. NY has no personal property or wheel tax and relatively low weight based registration fees. Our motorhome for instance, is just $70/year. Carlos
Real ID is part of the Patriot Act, so thank your republican legislators for foisting it on us. In AZ, we get a choice of a compliant or non-compliant driver's license. You can choose the compliant one if you need to use that ID for anything federally controlled. It's not so much a requirement on the state to do it, but that the old IDs won't be accepted for federal uses. I'm already required to have a different DHS ID card anyway, so I kept the non-compliant license, which has a UPS box address.
Twotoes
The Patriot Act expired several years ago The Real ID Act is the current law. If you have a Passport you can use it for your Federal ID if you want to be non-compliant. agesilaus
The real id act actually kicks in next October according to an article in Wired. All states are finally complying. It was supposed to go into full effect years ago and has been repeatedly delayed but this time it looks like it will happen. You won't be able to travel by air, enter federal courthouses or office buildings and I guess military bases and so on w/o the real id. Carlos
Keep in mind though that lots of other IDs are compliant, even if the DL isn't.

That's true I think Passports, merchant mariner ID's and probably military IDs are compliant. Maybe one or two others.
