Power your devices with the sun: 11 great solar chargers

I love gadgets. Some even turn out to be useful like high power Cree LED flashlights and banana hangers. I daily use a car cradle for my phone and a Jabra cruiser hands free and FM retransmitted. The cradle is plugged into the power receptacle in my dash and has an always on USB 5v charger to charge when needed.

These gadgets better work very well for the price, because most are not cheap. But there are some very intriguing designs in these possibly very useful solar gadgets, especially for extended boondockers, hikers and tent campers. No reviews for how they actually work, but I can say my $25 solar security lights with motion detectors work great. Useful? Not useful?

Hey Star,

I just clicked on it again and it led to the Tech republic slide show on solar chargers?? If you are getting spam links on your end that could be trouble. If you get an ad that can be closed in the upper right corner that happens on lots of websites. I am using IE, and Tech Republic is a reputable online tech resource. I get their newsletter daily for the past ten years or so I have been a member. It works for me.

I have the LL Bean green microlink FR 160. They only show the Red Cross version. Basic but still works after five years: http://www.etoncorp.com/en/productdisplay/microlink-fr160-0

We have a motor home with 640 watts of solar and a 1500 watt PSW sine wave. Normally we charge our cell phones and other devices with that. But I also carry one of these:

This can actually jump-start cars. I haven't tried to jump the RV yet, but since our engine is a 5.9L Cummins that typically sits in a pickup I suspect it will do it unless the main battery is too far gone.

I have one of these that I keep in my hiking pack (just in case). It's a great item that works exactly as advertised. It works as a light, automated SOS beacon, charger for I-phones and I-pads and recharges by solar.

Wow Jim,

I love the mission statement and impact. Guess I'll have to get one and give one. It's a five volt charger for any phone or 5 volt tablet, not just iPhones. It will do Android and Windows phones and tablets too I believe from what I read. Here is a page showing it charging a Samsung. https://us.waka-waka.com/store/catalogue/wakawaka-power_23/

Thanks for the heads up on a great and charitable company.
