GPS for RVers

Recommended Posts

OK, I did not see a thread on this on the forum. I'm between:

Garmin RV 760LMT https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/rv/rv-760lmt/prod135455.html

AND

Rand McNally 7730LM http://www.randmcnally.com/category/rv-gps

I will be picking up my new 5ver in about a month. So I will be getting one in 3 weeks or less. Who has either of these and what do you like and dislike. I will be full timing so I think a tool like this would be REALLY helpful.

Thanks for your incite and feedback.

We recently had friends demo a Rand McNally 7730LM for us. They previously had a Garmin? The RM is very detailed and they took a class on it at the recent Tuscon Escapade and still said there is more to learn.

Here is a side by side comparison of several RV GPS's: http://www.doityourselfrv.com/rv-gps-comparison-review-best-options/

One of the features I like about either one is that you can program two vehicles ie your RV and your toad for weights, heights and lengths and it prepares a route with that in mind.

Here are some user reviews of the RM: http://www.amazon.com/Rand-McNally-7730-RV-GPS/product-reviews/B00N3RM186

User reviews of Garmin: http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-760LMT-Portable-GPS-Navigator/product-reviews/B00CZ6WFXM

Here is another discussion comparing RM and Garmin: http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27671770/gotomsg/27675354.cfm

We have used the TomTom in the past and chose it over the Garmin at the time because it had more menu options. Some users don't like that feature. The Garmin presets limited our options but made it faster to use.

Because we have a big rig we use a RM Motor Carrier Atlas aka Truck Atlas combined with the TomTom get to our destinations then use the truck to explore after we arrived.

I recently saw both, a friend introduce me to them. The only complaint is the brightness. Take both of them outside and see which one you really like. Also goto the "About Screen" and see who produces the Maps. I know Navtec is installed in the Garmin and maybe it is also used in the RM. But verify first.

I had the older 771O and liked it. It wasn't perfect at routing and the hardware was a bit slow, but it was nice to have the database and the height restrictions. I used it in conjuction with Google maps on my phone, and it served as our sole means of navigation in Mexico and Canada. After getting an iPad mini, I sold the 7710 and bought the Rand McNally RV app. It is exactly the same, and better in ways (easier to get updates and realtime info oN it). recently, when towing I had wind overlay and knew ahead of time that I was headed into a rough patch of wind.

I have had the Garmin 760LMT for several years and really like it. It is very easy to use one of the best features is the Garmin Smart Link that loads an app on your smartphone you can search for anything you need and once you find it you can send it to your navigator. It is a large unit with a 7" screen, lane selection which gets you in the proper lane when needed. The lifetime traffic works very well it will show tie ups, slow downs, traffic speed and will give you the option to detour if needed. You can set it for the height, length, weight of your rig and it won't route you into restricted roads. It will also tell you the speed limit of the road you are on. All-in-all a great unit.

UPDATE:

I found another thread that came up with this topic and some great information was brought up. It looks like I will be going with CoPilot in an Apple or Droid. Still need to determine which one of those.

Does anyone know if there is an app or gps feature which addresses steep grades?

I'd really like that feature, and to program for scenic routes with my rig size would be extra swell.
