  4. I've put down roots in Northern California and am not currently on the road, so I'm selling both my truck and the Automated Safety Hitch. Together, they towed my 32 foot 5th wheel 10,000 miles in four months, and got me across several mountain ranges. If you don't know about the safety hitch, you can read about it here: http://www.automatedsafetyhitch.com/ I haven't used a conventional hitch, so I have nothing to compare it with, but I know that as a new driver, the extra set of brakes gave me more confidence going down hills with all that weight behind me, and I had really good maneuverability. It also has a feature that lets you use the hitch winch to tow your RV out of mud, which was invaluable to me more than once, when I would otherwise have had to pay a tow service and wait for hours. The company provides great support and the owner/inventor was always available by phone to troubleshoot or answer questions. It was useful to have the bed of my truck available for loads when not towing. Although people unfamiliar with it were skeptical, my experience with it was very good. Once you get the hang of it, you can hitch and unhitch very quickly, with the hitch motor doing most of the work. The truck is a black, crew cab, 2014 Sierra Denali 2500HD Diesel pickup, with around 87,000 miles on it and a white LEER cap for the bed. The safety hitch requires a modified receiver and the truck has one permanently installed, (not the usual way it's attached) which is why I'm selling them together. Removing it would involve cutting it off so I'm hoping to find a buyer who wants the whole package. It has a new fuel pump and injectors, and various finicky electronic sensors have been replaced. Some of these trucks have a problem with power steering fluid, and that's been fixed on this one. The 2014 diesel Denali sells for around $43,000 and I paid $12,000 for the hitch, including the towing out of the mud feature, for a total of $56k. I'm asking $42k for the truck to allow for the cost of removing the receiver in the future, if necessary, and $8k for the hitch for a total of $50k. 5. Hi everyone, After months of deliberating, we have finally settled on our next long-term rig. (We're in a "starter" rig right now that is not suited to full-time use). For a long time we have had our eyes on a toy hauler and a HDT truck to tow it. However, for various reasons, logistical and financial, we've elected to forego the toy hauler and get a large travel trailer. The rig we have our eye on is 37' 4" long and has a GVWR of 10,995 lbs. While I generally understand all the concepts behind the different weight ratings like GVWR, CVWR, curb weight, etc., I just don't feel completely competent in choosing the right tow vehicle. Keep in mind that I was previously considering a HDT, which means I do not want to "skimp" and get a tow vehicle that is barely adequate. I'd like to have some nice wiggle room, if we can afford it. We'll definitely need to buy used, but we're interested in a diesel with a crew cab. We'll be carrying quite a bit of gear in the bed of the truck (don't really have a weight estimate on how much right now). My rudimentary research (and observations from real-life) seem to indicate that a F-250 or similar truck with a 6.7 L will handle our needs - but is that cutting it too close for comfort? Open to suggestions... And I have a few specific questions: 1) Any reason to avoid getting a DRW truck to pair with a travel trailer, other than added cost and tire maintenance? I'm leaning toward DRW if we can find a good deal - just for the additional peace of mind in stability and cargo capacity. 2) What about a crew cab + long (8 ft) bed configuration? Will having a longer truck like that be something i regret when it comes to maneuverability with the trailer? We could use the extra storage offered by the longer bed, but we can forego it if it makes a significant impact on maneuverability. 3) Gear ratios - what should I be looking for? Thanks for any advice!
  6. Anyone tow with a HDT? Going to buy our truck today and have been looking at the newer F450's. Will the F450 require bags to tow a mobile suite? I know trucks but I know nothing about diesels or HDT's. Would rather have the HDT to sit higher and all the benefits of pulling/stopping our rig but don't know anything about manufactures, milage, etc... We will be traveling rvers living full time. Thanks for any input.
  7. Hi everyone, We want to buy a used diesel truck in the next 2 weeks and need some advice. We purchased a 2015 38' Canyon Trail with four slideouts. Dry weight about 12,000 pounds. We plan to take it around North America and spend a good amount of time in the mountains so we need something with guts to pull it through mountain passes. We have been looking for a diesel truck, a Chrysler 2500HD or 3500 because the manufacturer shows it will pull about 16,000. (We want an extra 30% towing capacity.) We have been unable to find towing statistics for Ford and Dodge trucks so I'm wondering if someone can recommend models easily capable of pulling this rig? Thanks in advance.

  9. 1999 Freightliner FLD120 single axle tractor. In excellent shape with very low original miles. 12.7 liter Detroit Diesel, up to date on all services. Steer tires are new, drive tires approx 35% remaining. Has commercial fifth wheel and fold away goose neck ball with all the electrical hook ups to pull anything from a commercial trailer, car hauler, or a camper. Plenty of accessories inside and out, 5' stainless steel exhaust stacks, 1000 watt inverter with two plugins, toolbox for storage or generator, bunk hardly used, aftermarket steering wheel, Eaton 9 speed manual trans, new paint, stainless steel fender covers, stainless steel wing, dual 120 gallon fuel tanks, cb radio, and new cd player. Truck recently used to haul cars, but we are getting out of the business. The mileage will change some as it will still be on the road until it is sold.
