  1. Maine Leaves and Lobster (Head Out Program) September 27 – October 1, 2021 The best time to visit Maine is September, after the summer crowds have left, but before the temperatures drop. Maine landscapes are quaint and beautiful, and its coastal beauty is stunning! Feel the crisp air in the mornings and see Mother Nature’s abundant beauty in the vibrant colors of the fall leaves. Trees, like the dogwood, red oak and maples, turn red and burgundy; hickory, birch and elm change to gold and yellow; mountain maples are reddish-orange, and the sumac is purple. As autumn leaves grace the hillsides and mountaintops, you have a painted scenery that is unmatched anywhere else in the world! In the evenings, you can sit outside with new and old Escapees friends and watch the vibrant colors of the sunset spread across the horizon. Bring binoculars to study native and migratory birds, such as Bald Eagles, Osprey, Peregrine Falcons, Shorebirds, Warblers and Flycatchers, to name a few. Visit the beautiful Acadia National Park and learn about its history, geology, park wildlife, and make stops at Thunder Hole and also Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East coast. Tour a fjord named Somes Sound, which runs deep into Mount Desert Island and is one of the main sites at Acadia National Park. The Sound nearly splits the island in two. Board a lobster boat and have a unique, enjoyable tour of Bar Harbor. Watch and learn about the whales, sea lions, and lighthouses on a cruise tour. 4. The Black Hills and Badlands HOP (The Head Out Program) October 6 – 10, 2020 The Escapees RV Club is offering an amazing set of combination tours for the Black Hills and Badlands. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Deadwood, Custer State Park, the Presidential Summer White House to former President Calvin Coolidge and Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the surrounding areas are a few of these tours! Mount Rushmore National Memorial contains granite faces carved into the Black Hills depicting U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. These stately faces are nearly 60 feet high. George Washington’s nose is 21 feet tall, and each of the eyes on Mount Rushmore is about 11 feet wide, with each mouth is about 18 feet wide. The memorial was completed in 1941 under the direction of artist Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln. Located in the middle of America’s heartland, are a wooded and mountainous region called, the Black Hills. The Lakota Sioux tribe called this mountain range Pahá Sápa, or “Hills That Are Black.” From a distance, the hills are dark in appearance with mostly ponderosa pines. On the other hand, the Badlands are a sunny, desert-like area with cliffs and gullies. The Badlands are indeed a testament to the power of the forces of wind and water! Located in the beautiful Black Hills, is Deadwood, founded in 1875, being the location of the last major gold rush in the United States. The booming town gained a reputation as a rough-and-rugged mining camp where Wild Bill Hickok was killed, and Calamity Jane earned her claim to fame. While in Deadwood, you can study the historical narratives of the Native American Lakota tribe and their hunt for the bison. Custer State Park and wildlife preserve is famous for bison, but also has mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorns, mountain goats, coyotes, elk and bighorn sheep. Custer State Park has beautiful scenic drives and is one of the nation’s largest state park. Before it’s closing in 2002, this area had the largest and deepest Black Hills gold mine in North America! 7. Balloon Fiesta HOP (Head Out Program) Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Option #1: October 2 - 7, 2020 Option #2 October 7 - 11, 2020 Option #3: Oct. 2 - 11, 2020 Balloons, balloons and more balloons! If this world premiere event is on your bucket list, join the Escapees RV Club HOP for the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Each morning, as dawn breaks over the Sandia Mountains, the skies will fill with 600 bright, beautiful hot-air balloons from all over the world. From its beginnings in 1972, the Balloon Fiesta has grown into the largest International Balloon Fiesta, with a 365-acre Balloon Fiesta Park and a launch field the size of 54 football fields (78 acres). It is the most photographed hot-air balloon festival in the world, with 886,307 attendees in 2019. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the only Balloon Fiesta where the "box effect" comes into play. The "box effect" is a unique wind pattern that helps pilots navigate their balloons in a vertical, rectangular path; allowing them to return to the launch field, or even landing next to your RV. The Dawn Patrol lifts off in the dark, with specially-fitted lights, to observe weather conditions at different altitudes, such as the wind speed and its direction. Upon approval, the balloons lift off in a mass ascension. The "Zebras," dressed in black and white, are the ones who coordinate the launching of the balloons. One of the most exciting events is the Flight of the Nations Mass Ascension, where balloonists wave their national flag during the launch. Even though there are always traditionally-shaped balloons, there will be various specialty shapes, too, and some of the most popular are the cow, sun, pig, stagecoach, clock, skunk, the Ladybug and the sweetest mother, daddy and baby bumblebees. The bumblebee's hands have Velcro, so when they touch in midair, it appears they are holding hands. When visiting any of the balloon pilots, remember to ask them for one of the trading cards, which will explain all the pertinent information about their balloon. This fiesta also hosts the Gas Balloons – America’s Challenge race, with the winner being the one that has traveled the farthest. Past gas balloons have gone as far as the East Coast and across Canada. You can track their progress on the Fiesta website. At dusk, you can see the Twilight Glow on the launch field. This is when the burners are ignited, filling the balloons with a bouquet of bright colors. Then, the nights will finish with an extraordinary display of fireworks. Escapees will have Boondocking, “rally style” parking and a private tent for inclement weather, socials, games and catered meals. There will be a considerable amount of walking, so please bring comfortable walking shoes, as well as binoculars and a camera to capture those once-in-a-lifetime special moments. Early arrival - Options 1 and 3 Due to the popularity of this event, we recommend early arrival for parking at the HOP location for Options 1 and 3 only. Early arrival is September 29, 2020. 14. What a magnificent time you are going to have on this cruise! Setting sail from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, you will have an opportunity to experience the Panama Canal aboard the luxurious comfort of Holland America’s ship, Ms. Zuiderdam. You will certainly enjoy going through the locks in the canal and, coupled with the wonderful shore excursions the ship has to offer, you are certain to have a lifetime of memories. Excursions are the best way to enjoy the magnificent sights and culture in each of the ports-of-call and to enjoy the warm embrace of the native people. On January 7, 1914, the Panama Canal opened for business, creating a water passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This mega ship mover was considered one of the largest engineering wonders of its time. Cruise ships that pass through the Panama Canal pay toll rates that are based on the number of berths. Every year 17,500 ships move through the locks. You may want to get a balcony for this cruise, as it will take 8 to 10 hours to navigate the locks. You will be able to see the expansion, often called the “third locks,” which doubled the capacity of the Panama Canal, once that portion opened, in 2016. 15. My wife and I are shopping for a used Class A, and we are befuddled by where the manufacturers place the TVs. With few exceptions they TV in the living area is mounted a) Behind the dinette, facing toward the front of the coach, or Above the cab, facing the back of the coach. Meanwhile, the sofa is on one side wall facing the other. For those of you who live with either of these TV placements... How do you watch TV or movies? Do you have to sit in the dinette? Does one of you lie lengthwise on the couch while the other sites in a captains chair? Have you found a workaround where you can sit *together* and watch TV? This seems like a small issue, but since we plan to spend months at a time on the road it has become a big deal. But, having a TV mounted across from the couch is so rare that insisting on that eliminates 90% of the coaches that fit our other specifications - in particular our need for bunks. So, it's a lifestyle question. How do you handle the typical TV locations when you are living in your RV?
