  1. Today the weather was about 7 degrees this am so planned to stay home and do things that I want to do.. was looking at Montana vintage arms website. Just looking at stuff and it hit me. The rear of my scope has a 1/4” hole in it. I was impressed with that size hole. Now not so. Was reading about rear sight holes on cartridge rifles. Well I need to rethink that 1/4” hole. just a tad big I believe. So I found a Colt 45 cartridge, that did not have a primer i it and looked trough that hole. Yep that 1/4” hole is toooo big. Sooo I was thinking outside the box as one would say today. So tomorrow I am going to install a adjustable nickel in the rear of the scope, Sorta just thinking, Vern in a T-shirt
  2. Something I found years ago may help. If you look on both sides of the firewall, on the engine side. There should be 3 ground post on each side of the fire wall. Remove and clean all surfaces. This is on a Volvo cab of your vintage. Just by chance, Vern in a T-shirt
  3.   Kirin,

I think we need to bring the subject of a vaccine up. As to where you need to be to get yours.

At your family doctor.  Or can you get it on the road.

Just think some people should start thinking what they need to do.

  4. Today I finally had a chance to align the iron sights that are fairly close to being on target. And then adjust the scope to the same target. The white building I sighted on is about 1200 yards away. That may take three shots to get that far, maybe. That I would say may take a few months practice to get there.. I really have no idea how far I can shoot accurately or how far. The barrel was of good quality from Douglas barrels back in the mid seventies. I tried to take a picture through the scope but it would not focus out the other end. I do believe the scope is close enough to go back to the range again. That depends on road conditions as it is white outside. I have been working on what bullet to use. I am bidding on one at a local action that will end tomorrow night. I am also thinking of making my own mold at the neighbors machine shop. I know that is cheating.. but I could say I was delivered by steam boat as the Missouri has not frozen yet. They would have made them in St Louis back in the day. I am still working part time so that gets into the good days for shooting. Vern in a T-shirt
  5. Going back to my subject of winter preparation. So we have seen two nights at about 0 degree and a lot of teens and twenties. Underbelly is sealed with 1 1/2” styrofoam boards to the ground. So the under rv heat does make a considerable difference in warmth on the floor of the slideouts. Since this is a experiment and had no reference to go on, it has taken adjusting to regulate propane usage. It worked for awhile and then it quit. Too cold to step out that morning to test things. So finally go out to see what was wrong???? Dam propane bottle was empty. Install another and it works now. So what I have discovered so far is to regulate when and at what temperature to use it. Another complex situation in our fifthwheel that I installed a Aquahot heating system several years ago. I have a heat exchanger at the rear of the fifthwheel under the floor and sealed the the under belly really tight. Also put a heat exchanger under the kitchen floor. Now the two under floor heat exchangers operate on there own thermostats. So over using the under rv heater causes the Aquahot thermostats do not call for heat. I noticed that with running the under rv furnace used lots of propane. BBButt much less diesel for the Aquahot system. So this gives me something different to think about. More tech thoughts underway on this situation. Will report when info is available. Vern in a T-shirt
  6. I am curious if at low temperatures, does the actual boiling of propane, make the liquid colder in the tank, than the outside air temperature. Just thinking, Vern in a T-shirt
  7. The other answers are really good. But I have seen a pet cause that problem. Hair spray, perfume and glue can do that. One time I had a service call for a lp detector keep going off in a class c. They had left the southeast of the US headed to Alaska. They want to make the trip efficiently so said husband redid the shelving so to hold more food for the trip. My handheld lp detector will pickup molecules of combustible products. Well he made the shelves with particle board. Yep the glue from the freshly cut wood was letting the smell of the glue trip the lp detector. Could be anything that gives off a gas. Vern in a T-shirt
  8. Well up here in Montana the weather got me sidetracked as in 0 degrees for two nights. And about 8” of snow. The road to the range was probably not the best for travel. It finally warmed up and melted the snow. So I hope by Wednesday I can get back to the range.. I looked at the rifle yesterday and need to attach the shadow tube permanently. Maybe just solder it on. Then fine tune the front sight. Also need to shorten one set screw on the rear adjustment collar. So I have been doing some other thinking and reading on long distance shooting. One subject is what bullet to use???? The other is to use paper patch bullets or grease groove bullets. This is practice? I have never tried a paper patch bullet before. So I am practicing as to how to do it. Also need to make my existing bullet mold better for casting good bullets. The bullet I am using in the photo has a bad nose wrinkle. But it is working for learning paper patching techniques. Working on a small shop area for winter working area in cold weather. Mostly for gun work as I have two or three other gun projects to do this winter. If I can hide enough. Stay Safe out there! Vern in a T-shirt
  9. Call Volvo for wiring schematics for your vin.number. Have the vin number ready and call there tech support. There number should be in the resource guide. I have it in my truck I do believe. It may take some time to find it. If you get a helpful person on the other end they may point in the the correct place real fast. They should be there 24/7. Vern in a T-shirt
  10. The idea of the 12vdc light As stated above is a very easy way to look for your problem. With the light one could do it by yourself. Just need some patience to remove one connection at a time. If that is not the problem reconnect that connection. Then move to the next one. And move one part of the harness at a time. Just limit the bad words that escape. Then when you fix it you can leave good words fly as much as you want. Thinking, Vern in a T-shirt
  11. So we have had two nights at about 0 degrees. I did remove the waterline and used tank water. I have a commercial heat tape on the waterline with foam insulation on top of it. When I bout 6” plastic ductwork for my underbelly furnace install I hade extra 6” ductwork. So i installed it over top of the waterline for two reasons. More insulation and just in case we needed to travel. I could just pull it out if the 6” is frozen in place.. Now I did try to seal the end so as to stop water infiltrating the fiberglass. 12. After brushing my hair this am the name of that tool fell out on the counter. It said tone generator. With this tool you should be able to follow that wire . You should be able to find the other end out under the hood with it. Thinking, Vern in a T-shirt
  13. What you need is a wire tracing tool. You could follow the wire from the fuse and find the other and. Wether it is the bad part that it leads you to or a broken wire. I have one but it’s name is in storage under my hair at the moment. Just google wire tracing tool. Also watch a YouTube video on said subject. Just thinking, Vern in a T-shirt
  14. If you go to the resource guide in the HDT section you can find pdf files on your engine. It may be worth your time to read through it. Also look up the Volvo cab wiring. It might make Darryl’s thoughts faster to come into play. Not fun sitting along the road . Wondering. Vern in a T-shirt
  15. Normally we would be on our way to Arizona or south somewhere. But with the covid thing happening we decided to stay put in Montana. Now at that time, that decision looked really good. But the covid thing is spreading in Montana also. But here we sit. And going to make the best of it. We hope. So my main heat is diesel as I installed a Aquahot several years ago. It works really great in the area where I could run piping for heat exchangers. But putting them in the slides would be sorta difficult. So with the slides extended the bottom of the slides do get cool or cold, depending on outside air temperature and wind speed.. especially when temps are near 0. So I decided to install the skirting which took more time than I thought it should. But it is done. So the idea of a furnace underneath really came from having getting it on trade labor last winter just Incase. At that time I did not know what just Incase meant on this subject. Bulk propane may be an option for that furnace if things stay cool. I do need to get a bulk container for diesel fuel. As now I just have a old propane tank converted to a diesel tank. And at 0 degrees at night it needs filled every two or three days. I ran it out of fuel once. Will not do that again. I normally only get down about 5 gallons on that tank until I fill it again. Our truck holds 300 gallons of fuel. But that fuel has road tax on it which is about 50 cents to the gallon. I think a 55 gallon drum will suffice for the diesel tank. May get one of those today. Vern in a T-shirt
  16. It works better if you keep propane in the bottle. We had 2 degrees last night. Got up and the slide floor was cold. Furnace would not stay lit. Went out to check and thetank was empty. Vern in a T-shirt
  17. At 7:54 am the temperature is The furnace has run constantly since turned on at 5:45 am Now remember it also has to heat the tires and axles as they are enclosed. Once it gets to temperature it cycles on and off as the thermostat is satisfied. Vern in a T-shirt
  18. So the furnace has been on for just over an hour the temperature has risen to 59 degrees. It may have come up since the photo was taken. Vern in a T-shirt
  19. So some other things have gotten in my range time, so no new info on shooting. But really going to try and get to the range mid week. I really am excited to try the new adjustment system on the rear of the scope. I had to work a few days. Had more doctoring done since last range time, and that eye correction takes about 3 days to calm down. Two other yearly doctor checkups Tuesday and Wednesday. If I can get to the range on Tuesday after the doc visit I am going to try and get to the range as it is about halfway there.. Now that long range shooting place I heard of is going to need to be warmer than now. As we have maybe 5” of snow on the ground and it is a backcountry gravel road. Although I do have a Jeep. I do have two other gun projects to do during bad weather this winter. On one build I needed to find some technical questions answered. The last few days I have found what I needed. I think in the next few weeks I can get to that subject. Now this will involve using a lathe. So I will say it was sent back down the Missouri River for the machine work. Hope to get get it back before frezzeup. It will be different. Thinking of what sights would proper for it. Also found a small group of long range muzzleloader within about 45 minutes drive. They shoot at just over 1000 yards. But they only shoot once a year on Memorial Day weekend. I am trying to find where they shoot. Vern in a T-shirt
  20. So today I am going to test outside under camper furnace for operation. This is the temperature of the slide floor at about5:42 am. The furnace was turned off last night at about 9:15 pm. The overnight temperature outside was about 22 degrees. So I put a remote thermometer on the floor to record the temperature increase. If it does. Today it should stop snowing where we are in Montana, then start blowing the snow around. And temps to drop into the single digits tonight. Stay safe Vern in a T-shirt
  21. This photo shows the factory installed twin furniture in our Teton fifthwheel. And how close they are to the slide seal. g But that is a good point to check for fumes entering anywhere. I did finish the installation with a regulator and all proper fittings. I used my test propane assembly from my rv repair business to see how my idea will work. When testing for propane leaks on my connections I noticed my regulator was leaking just enough to smell it. So I installed a new one before trying the system. The heating system is controlled by a switch inside the rv. With a thermostat installed in the basement area that turns the furnace on and off as needed. The thermostat is set at 62 degrees. It sets under the slide end where my recliner sits. You can hear it turn n and off. But very little noise. I did run ducts to the other side and to ifront of the axles. I used 1 1/2” pink styrofoam insulation board to close the underbelly in. It is all enclosed. About 50 percent of the edges are sealed. Hopefully I will be back from a small job today and get the rest of the sealing done before we get snow and high winds this afternoon. So the passenger side slide floor does does warm up nicely. Which should cut the interior heat operation cost. Cost of this operation to be determined over the winter. Vern in a T-shirt
  22. So we are going to see temperatures in the single diggits in a few days. So this is one of our things we do to contain our heat inside. We pull the ducted vent covers off and cover with a sandwich baggy. Then put them back in place. Once they are on if you open and close the door you can see them puff down when the door is opened. And up when the door is closed. There must be some venting to the outside I do believe. It mite be hard to see where it is. Vern In a T-shirt
  23. Those drops may be coming from other entrance points. Just coming out of those vents. Last winter I had a similar problem that a customer called me about. I looked all over the roof with the customer and would not find anything wrong. So I checked the tightness on the ac units. They were just a tad loose. There was a junction box on the roof for solar. I opened it up and noticed the o ring style seal was not installed correctly. Cleaned it up and where it fit in. Used some pure silicone dielectric grease on it. So the next rain day in Arizona where we were, he called and said it is still leaking. But only in one spot. Then he moved across the street from us. Looked at the roof very seriously and still could not find anything wrong. Apparently it finally dried out. No more leeks. And I have seen that situation happen before. Just my thoughts, Vern in a T-shirt
  24. Here is something not many people know about. Back in the mid 70s I was at Gettysburg NP and I was looking around with some other history friends and dam if there was a Cannon with Whitworths rifling in it? We could not believe it. Well my copy thing is out in neverland some where. If you search for cannons at GNP with Whitworth riding you can find them. Now what I looked at and tried to copy even said there were breech loading Whitworth cannons there also. Well today I am going to the eye doctor to get my lenses refocused by injection. Then when the weather is better this weekend I will try that scope out. Have a good day, Vern in a T-shirt
  25. Back in about 1975 I did have a Whitworth rifle in my hands. It did not have a scope if I remember correctly. These historical subject do fascinate me. I just like history a lot. My scope idea was just something I thought of as I was building this rifle. Then I found a article on William Malcolm’s scopes. So I have built it by hand with soldering and things I thought one mite find available on the Great Plains during the 1870’. It does have a rear sight from a cartridge rifle from that time period I do believe. it has really been interesting to build it and understand when materials and fasteners were invented. Today I did fool with trying to paper patch a bullet. I need another bullet mold for that subject. Vern in a T-shirt
