  1. One of the best dogs we ever had was a Corgi mix that was part of a litter left at the pound with the eyes not yet fully open. We adopted her 2 weeks later at an estimated 6 weeks of age and we had her for more than 16 years. We still miss her.
  2. Interesting view. I have always stored ours empty and sanitize annually. I have never had a problem from that but can see your point.
  3. Do you still do that today? If so, keep your teeth clinched to strain out the bigger things from your neighbor's livestock.

  5. Have you ever had a dog needing 14 teeth extracted? Have you had a dog that needed emergency surgery due to 3 bladder stones in his urethra and 5 more in his bladder? The alternative was to have him put down, which is probably what most people would have done and I'm sure his previous owner would have done. We adopted a 7 year old dog that has become my wife's soul mate, and while the dog might not be my priority, my wife's wellbeing and happiness is. No, we didn't go look for the cheapest place to have any of his care done but chose what we believed to be the best care. His bladder surgery was done at MedVet Dallas. Most of my life I could not have paid what either of those cost, ($2800 for teeth and $6000 for surgery) and we would have had no choice but to put the dog down, but this was a choice of what value do I put on saving the dog that my wife has come to love over the year that she has had him. How much would you spend to keep your wife happy? For me, because we do have the money the question was, which do I value more, her happiness or my money?
  6. A lot depends on how you define "a larger dog" as I knew someone who did so with a great dane but that obviously is larger than you have in mind. If you stay in commercial RV parks it is important to keep in mind that some RV parks ban specific breeds. For example, you might come across a park that doesn't allow breeds such as Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Mastiffs, and Rottweilers. Other parks may limit four-legged guests to “small dogs only”, or place a weight limit (such as 40 lbs) on canine guests. You also need to be aware that adopting an older dog has some potential issues that do not usually come with a puppy. We adopted a 20# dog that was 7 years old. We anticipated some difficulty in adjusting but it has now been 11 months and he has had 14 teeth pulled and emergency bladder surgery for stones blocking the urethra. He has adapted to our home but still deals with anxiety issues and is slow to warm up to strangers and visitors as well as other dogs. He is very possessive of my wife and while he is improving as a traveler, he has a long way to go. An older dog is much more likely to have difficulty adapting to a change of home and owners. In the past year we have spent nearly $10,000 on him.
  7. Actually, what does not need light is called bacterium but most of us lump the two together. And I have had an algae problem in the water line to the ice maker of our RV refrigerator, so the amount of light needed is quite small for some varieties. We have drank water from the RV potable water tanks for all of the RVs that we have owned, since our first one more than 40 years ago and for all 12 years of fulltime. I sanitize once a year and with the exception of one summer of campground hosting in a Kansas park and on well water, have not had any algae problems and once we had a bacterium issue in the water heater that causes an odor, especially in the shower.
  8. Because an RV water system is not air tight, it is possible algae or similar biological to get into the water and contaminate it but I would not be concerned after only 3 months unless there is some reason to suspect a problem, such as odors or discoloration. If the water you put into the tank was chlorinated and not run through a charcoal filter(which removes the chlorine), I would be very surprised to see any problem in less than 6 months or even a year. I usually cycle the water in my tank more than twice a year, but have gone longer with no problems at all.
  9. As an observer of highway construction over the years, I have found that often the speeds posted change from time to time, depending upon what is happening at the time. The area where we now live has several major projects that take several years to complete and there are times that the speed is the same and other times the speed could be anywhere from 10 mph lower to as much as 40 mph lower.
  10. The answer to that is a very personal thing. The best way to get an accurate prediction of that would be through your present agent. I assume that saking about health insurance.
  11. Reading through the comments related to high blood pressure makes me wonder about the age groups that we are discussing. At my first visit to my primary care physician after turning 80, she scheduled me to see a cardiologist, mostly because I had never been to one. I am fortunate to have come from parents who descended from a long line heart healthy ancestors. As a result my typical B/P is 112/68, which I'm told is unusual for someone my age. 🙄
  12. I edited it to change to a different map.
  13. No need for that sort of effort but I'd not wait too long. With the Escapade returning to the Sweetwater Events Center, there are a total of more than 900 full hookup RV sites available. Dry camping and handicapped camping are somewhat limited so if you want either of those it is important to act fairly quickly. In the past there were more than 900 RVs in attendance and we didn't even make use of the Boar's Tusk campground because of the distance from the events and it was not needed. You can get a feel for what is available by checking this map online. If this is your first Escapade, I do recommend that you plan to arrive on the first day of attendee parking if possible and the second day if not. Those who arrive first tend to be closer as the parking team fills the sites as people arrive so those who do not come in until the opening day will be in less desirable or more distante sites. Having been security team for the first time Escapade was at that location, I will tell you that there are no really bad sites and we had very few problems. There are shuttles available for those who are distant from events to get back and forth to the events. I also suggest that you consider signing up to put in a few volunteer hours as it will give you a little incite into what volunteers do there and you might even choose to become a part of the staff after a while. We attended 3 Escapades and volunteered which then lead to our becoming part of the staff. Unfortunately, age and health issues have kept us from attending any longer.
  14. This reminds me of the days when satelliet TV was new and you could buy equipment to get the signals without paying for them. It might be different but it sure sounds familiar. The same questions were common then. Here are a few internet sites that I thought interesting. 17. We have driven our 2003, Dodge/Cummins diesel truck all around California and spent time there are recently as a year ago. We have TX license plates and when driving it we have passed through CA agricultural check stations with it and nobody even noticed. We sold our house and either sold or gave away everything that didn't fit into our RV. We were on the road fulltime for 12 years when my wife's health forced us from the road and back to part-time again. We did have a few things stored with our sons but very few and we didn't rent a storage space. Had we stored a bunch of furniture or something the storage costs for 12 years would have been far more than the value of what was stored. You may find this article to be helpful. 19. I doubt it is so much interpretation of the act as it is being willing to go farther into it and then do the alternative. I highly doubt that most banks even have an employee that has read section 326 the act and the supplemental regulation from the treasury department that it required. The problem is that the physical address is the easiest way to meet those regulations and most banks and credit unions have very little need for the extra records that are needed if they accept an alternative address as the treasury department regulation allows. If you are interested, this is a copy of the US Treasury Dept. regulation for section 326, and the identification regulation begins on page 9 and continues for 5 pages. If you were to do business with any bank or investment company in Livingston TX you might be surprised just how easily the requirements can be met if the institution has an employee familiar with the requirements and they have a provision for doing so. It really doesn't help a lot that most of what is shared with others is more opinion than knowledge and it's not easy to find the actual answers. Like so many other issues that impact fulltime RVers, we are so small a portion of the US citizenry that little or no real effort is made to accomodate us outside of a few locations where we congregate and none at all at the federal level.
  20. Welcome to the Escapee forums! As long as an automobile, truck, or RV is legally registered and meets the requirements of the state where it is registered, it is legal to operate on the roads and highways of all of the states. Both Canada and Mexico also honor those registrations. Where do you plan to keep your RV registered? Do you intend to keep your current domicile or move to another state? Have you considered joining the Escapees RV Club to get the support system that they offer to fulltimers?
  21. From Investopedia: In finance and investments, account activity refers to the transactions made by a client in a particular brokerage or bank account. Bill payments, cash withdrawals, and wire transfers are examples of account activities. Notice that nowhere in that definition does it require a physical presence in the bank or financial institution. Some banks only do business online so it is impossible to physically enter the bank. It really isn't difficult. If you read the information, all that really needs to be done is to be sure that all of your banks and financial institutions have your current address and phone number since they will reach out to the customer if an account becomes inactive. The problem you warn of does not exist.
  22. I suggest that you investigate the companies that will move a fifth wheel before you get too far. If you have not done so, visit some large RV dealerships and perhaps an RV show or two in order to get a feel for what RVs are available and what they cost. If you are thinking that this will save you a lot of money, that is not likely to be true and particularly if you pay someone to move the RV any significant distance several times a year. How much RV experience have you had? If the answer is none, then you might be wise to rent one first, just to get some feel for what you are undertaking. As for buying something that is motorized and then towing a car, I don't know what you have been reading, but there are many of us here and literally thousands of RV folks who do that and don't consider it to be a headache. When I first towed with my motorhome the thing that surprised me most was just how easy it was.
  23. If you read what I posted, any activity does that. Even going in to check the balance will do so.
