  1. It sounds like you've got things figured out. I'm just about 56 and Ialthough we have ample saved up to retire on we have much to get figured out before I think about retiring.
  2. I expect to keep ours another 8 years. At age 64 my expectation is that we will replace it with a slightly used high end 5ver (kind of thinking a New Horizons). After that I have no idea how often we will replace it. Likely 5 or 10 years but maybe never.
  3. You're not taking into account inflation. $40k in 32.5 years is not going to buy you much. Back in 1973 when I was just a kid I witnessed a relatively young man retiring with $250,000. In 1973 a pretty decent house could be bought for $35000. Anyway inflation hit and he thought he was richer than he actually was. He ended up broke, divorced, back to work and bitter in no time. Or was it divorced, broke, back to work and bitter .... I don't remember the exact order.
  4. Here is a Link to an online calculator that you can play with to try to pick a withdrawal rate that you would be comfortable with based on on the numbers you pick for some variables. If you think you can earn 6% interest with an inflation rate of 3.0% and you're planning on being dead and broke by the time you're 80 years old you could retire at 55 and plan on withdrawing about $72000 in your first year with the intent of adjusting your withdrawal rate every year to keep up with inflation. On the other hand if you want a guaranteed income on your investment you might only be able to get a 3% return with inflation at 2% and if you want to prepare to live to be 90 and leave $300,000 to your kids you would have to be happy with a $40,000 per year withdrawal rate.
  5. But you have to take into account inflation. Especially if you are planning on retiring at 55 years old. Someone retiring today and pulling out $40,000 in year 1 is going to have to pull out $86,000 in year 30 to have the same 40k buying power that he had in year 1. (based on only a 2.6% inflation rate).
  6. I think of middle class income is in the range of 40,000 to 120,000 per year. As has been mentioned at a 3% withdraw rate a person wanting to fully retire at 55 is going to need a minimum of 1,300,000 just to have a 40k annual salary. That is certainly going to put them at an income level far lower than "high on the hog" in my mind. Now that person living on 40k per year might be happier than someone else living on 200k but "high on the hog" definitely requires some cash.

You can come at it from a couple different ways but I'm basically thinking most people today wouldn't consider retiring at 55-60 years old unless they were debt free with at least 2 million saved up in investments. My kids will be in that age bracket 35 years from now. An inflation rate of 2.6 % would mean they should be planning to save 5 million over the next 35 years. I realize that people now can and do retire on less than 2 million but most who do will be considerably older than 55 and or are not planning to live very high on the hog.
  8. I look at how I got to where I am and realize I was blessed. I really didn't have much of a clue what I was doing when I was young but basically did what my father was advising me to do. He helped me secure loans to purchase real estate. So I was able to gain a lot of leverage on my money and when the markets increased I did very well. Now I look at my children and realize the amount of money they will need for a comfortable retirement when they are 55 -60 years old is far more than what they will ever save up from a middle class salary. I see it as my responsibility to watch for opportunities to coach and help them make wise investments while they are young. (I'm expecting my kids will each need $5,000,000 to retire on).
  9. With the bike loaded I'm only slightly over the GVWR of the trailer and well within the axle rating. The frame on this particular trailer is very strong (18" deep frame rails) so I'm not worried about the frame strength.
  10. In my case I need to move them both back 20". To put the front behind the back would put too much weight on the pin. Adding a third axle behind the rear axle would work very well but it would be more expensive than moving the tandems back. When I move the axles back I will build a sub frame to lift the trailer up a few inches as a secondary goal.
  11. I built my own motorcycle lift for my victory to ride on the back of my 5th wheel. I've used it but to get it good I need to move my trailer axles back 20". I'm curious as to what the OP ended up doing?
  12. I'm planning on lifting my fiver about 5 inches. In my case I will build a sub frame out of 2x6 rectangular tubing. Part of the reason I want to use a sub frame is to strengthen my frame and move my axles back about 20 inches. I need more pin weight on my truck.
  13. Obviously your set up is perfect for you and there is not a thing wrong with it. I just have a very different idea of the "ideal". I'd probably throw the razor on a hydralift on the back of the 5ver and say good by to the Bronco..... For some reason I look forward to climbing out of the class 8 and into a little pickup to go RVing.
  14. Nice unit but so different from me. I'm pretty sure I'd ditch the International, the old Powerstroke and the Escape and buy a new Powerstroke.
