While we were full time, we used the cell based MarCell power and temperature monitor. It worked and we still have it at home and take it on the road with us even for short trips. If the power goes down or the temperature is out of range, it sends a text message to both our cell phones. Ken

I have known a large number of LEOs over the years and they all tell me that the attitude of the person they stopped plays a large part in the outcome of the stop. You can either comply and treat the officer with respect or you may just talk yourself into a citation or worse. Just be respectful of the officer, even if you feel he is wrong. They have a very difficult job to do with all violence on the streets today. Ken

Since we have left the big RV behind, we no longer need the Winegard G2 antenna and VIP211Z receiver. Thye are 10 to 12 years old and served as a backup to the Traveler and other receiver. Comes with 50 foot of low loss shielded coaxial cable and 12 VDC power cord. This model supports two receivers but needs a separate 12 VDC power supply for the as it is not powered through the receiver. I will never have another RV gas/electric fridge in my RV. Our full-time rig had a Frigidaire 25 cu. ft that was power through the inverter, solar panel and battery bank when not on shore power. The smaller part-time trailer we just bought has a 12-volt compressor fridge with two 100 ah lithium batteries and solar. When I arrive I want the Blue Bell frozen and the beer and wine cold. Ken

We tried the T-Mobile home internet. and it worked OK, but not great. I needed better speed for the ADT system. We returned it within the free trial period and then the problems started. They kept billing my credit card for the monthly fee and then after I got that stopped, a charge for the 5G device that was returned. It only took 6 months to get it straight and get a ZERO dollar statement. Most of the time you wind up talking with an agent in Indonesian that does not have great English skills and must follow her script. Thankfully we did not fall for their pitch to change our Verizon phones to T-Mobile. Ken

Delaminating sidewalls is not all that uncommon; however it is most likely caused by water intrusion. The problem with delamination is that you cannot see the degree of damage below the surface. Water can come from a number of leak sources. The most common is failure of sealing materials around windows, door and other penetration that were at fault from the factory or from lack of maintenance. Repairing delamination can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. I would pass on the unit unless they made a really major price concession like $20,000. Ken

Generally you can to a heavier travel trailer than a 5er due to the increase hitch/pin weight on the 5er. SRW trucks reach the cargo capacity or rear axle GAWR well before they reach the towing limits. And remember you can always tell when an RV or auto salesperson is not telling the truth...he or she will move their lips every time. Ken

In the past we have had both good and bad experiences with "extended warranty" companies. They will weasel word every chance they get to keep from paying. If it is a covered item, they will generally pay. So, if you do go down the warranty rabbit hole, be sure and read the contract in detail to see what is and is not covered. Also make sure that you have the ability to get a full refund (in writing) for the contract within 60 or 90 days so that you can really read the contract. Also, check your responsibilities to maintain the unit and what records you need to prove your maintenance. On the last RV we bought, I self-insured and put the money in the bank. We never got close to what the "warranty" would cost. Now on the new truck we just bought, I did get the extended coverage since these new vehicles have such extensive computer controls and the drivelines are so complicated. Hopefully, I will never need to use it, but I at least have the peace of mind that I won't get shocked with a huge repair. Ken

You also need to provide an insurance or bonding binder for the drivers. No one is taking my RV on the road without proof of insurance covering the driver's liability. Minimum would be $500,000 and maybe more. Ken

It is only fair that EV owners pay an associated cost toward road usage as do fossil fueled vehicles. I Texas the majority of electricity is still generated from fossil fuel plants, coal or natural gas. In any case, the EV still causes wear on the roads and must pay their fair share. Ken

The Ford transmission issue is largely overblown in my opinion for that era. The big thing is regular maintenance of fluid and filter changing. It is much cheaper to service a transmission than replace or repair one. On my previous Ford trucks and motorhomes, I changed the fluid at 30000 to 35000 miles. Heat kills these transmissions and fluid. A motorhome is in the severe service area as far as I am concerned. If you go with the Ford, have a transmission service included. Drop the pan, change the filter and replace the fluid. Ken

I was fussed at a few years back for using the term "weekend warrior" as it offended someone's son-in-law. I still feel it is an appropriate tag for some of these folks as they attack the weekend with lots of gusto to get in as much as possible in as short of time as possible. Hopefully, they will learn that the rushing around is just adding stress to their own lives as well as endangering others. They are on a short timetable to get to a site set up, enjoy, tear down, get home and unpack. They may learn to slow down, plan shorter drive times and really enjoy the RV and outdoors time. So until they can learn that there are others on the road and that they are not the most important person on the road, I feel the term just might be the best description. It is not meant to hurt feelings. I get referred to as a slow old coot and it does not bother me. Maybe it should, but I earned the gray hair and the right to enjoy life at my speed. Ken

The Trailer Saver hitch hear (Holland Binkley) is a very positive latching head, but mistakes can happen. With my TS3 hitch, after hitching, I lifted the front trailer legs about 1" off the ground and did a tug test and then I even physically eye-balled the rear of the hitch to make sure the jaws were closed and then confirmed the hitch had latched and set my safety catch. I am an engineer and tend to like my belt with suspenders. I have seen folks get in a hurry and all of a sudden ....BANG. You look over and there they are with the trailer setting on a massed bed and tailgate. Ken

I have a new in the box evaporator blower wheel and a slightly used (about 2 weeks operating time) evaporator fan motor for a 15K Coleman Mach 8 heat pump. It is free for the taking, but I will not ship. We are located in Bryan, TX. Come and get them before I have to trash them. We are out of the RV business for now. Ken

For the insurance coverage across the US, you need to carefully examine the medical plan you intend to use. Many are not PPO and require you to use their specific in-network providers. If you go outside their coverage area or providers, coverage is reduced. If you are going to travel all over the US, look for insurance that is accepted in all of the states without reducing coverage. Ken
